Hi -
I owned, modified and rode an SR500G (1980) for a few years, until a bad hip caused me to give it up. The hip was fixed years ago, but young children and the pleasures and obligations they bring have kept me from riding at all. They're both teen-agers now, and I feel the call again. I put cafe bars and a Harro tank bag to good use in the past, riding that SR in all weather conditions, for hundreds of miles at a stretch. I'm looking forward to doing it again, before Time takes much more of a toll on me. In searching for a 500, I stumbled across the SR400, still made and sold in Asia Pacific. This bike looks even better than the SR500 to my eyes (well, it's a little prettier anyway). Does anyone know if you can buy and bring these into the US, and if so, how to do that? It's getting hard to find an SR500 here that isn't bored out to a set of washers or rusting its way through Armegeddon. Thanks for putting the forum together - it's a welcome sight!

Hey Esso! Welcome aboard. What part of the US are you in? Nice SR's come up from time to time on eBay. They can be a good deal if you can pick it up and avoid shipping. I've seen them from time to time on Craigslist.com, in the motorcycle classifieds section. Not sure how to get an SR400 into the US. Hope you get your hands on an SR soon! See 'ya around. Wecome to the forum , you should be able to find one , just keep those eyes & ears peeled . I had the same as you (not the hip but the urge to aquire a SR). One came my way in one of the local rags . It was actually agood one for me as it was an unfinished project that somebody wanted to get rid of . It was a frame & wheels , everything else was in milkcrates . It was a gamble , but I like putting bikes back together as its one of my hobbies . Took about 6 months to get to the riding stage but all was there &all is good , bonus was it was still regoed & the price was right (under a grand AUS ) . Cheers Davo.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll keep my eyes open on Ebay and Craigslist for sure. I live in the Chicago area. There should be a few SR's somewhere around here - finding one is the tough part. I don't mind putting a bike together either - at least when you're done, you know its condition pretty well. How about OEM replacement parts and improvements? I know a lot of people that went with a higher compression piston or a big bore kit, both of which seemed to make the bike harder to start. Then there are things like a front fork brace and new swing-arm bearings. White Brothers used to make parts for the SR, but I've no idea if they still sell these or not. I guess I have a learning experience ahead of me! Looking forward to it.

Welcome!
Definately be patient and keep your eyes to the newspaper ads. Chicago should certainly have a few of these.
I found mine (in Santa Fe, NM) in a newspaper. Very slightly modified, in generally good condition, not too bad a price ($1200 for a ready-to-ride bike). I've put it to good use, before getting too busy with my other, more needy machines.
This forum will be your best resource for restoring, modifying, you name it.
Good luck hunting!

Anyway, good to meet ya!
