Hey gang-
I just picked up my '78 SR500 a couple days ago. It's been Super fun so far. I've been riding cruisers for a few years and wanted to get on something that will handle the twisties a little better. I rode a '77 TT about a year ago and fell in love with the thumper feel. I couldn't resist when a decent SR came my way.
This one is pretty clean. It came with a set of clubman bars installed (I have the stock one too). Seems to have an aftermarket Mikuni flat slide carb on it. The stock airbox has been replaced with a big K&N filter. Both the carb and the petcock are leaking and there might be an oil leak. How much oil should be showing on the end of the temperature probe / dipstick?

Hey spindlehead: Welcome aboard! Sounds like a nice bike! Fuel tap rebuild kits come up all the time on eBay, and are easy to do (I'm a novice and found it a pretty simple undertaking). Mikuni rebuild kits are available as well (sounds like a bad gasket), but it may just need some cleaning and tightening up. As far as how much oil should be showing, the aftermarket oil temp dipsticks that I've encountered don't come etched with the upper and lower fill lines. You have to add them with a file. If it has no etched level lines, may be best to do a complete oil and filter replacement, and put the amount in indicated by the manual. If your dipstick in fact has no etched indicator lines, just let us know. I could post the measurements on the dipstick to make your hash marks. Anyway, welcome... ;D Gary Hopwheels

First of all: [glow=red,2,300]WELCOME TO THE SR500 FORUM![/glow]Second of all: quote"You know what? The stupid forum software edited the work "petc o ck" to "petthingy". How do you get anything said around here?" end quote The word censor is a necessary evil. It helps to catch someone intent on joining and immediately causing a disturbance. Although, it hasn't happened much in the last year or so... Do like we have been, work around it and have some fun with it. Take care and talk to you soon, G Man
