Hello,
I recently purchased an SR500 on eBay - plan to drive from central Missouri to Cleveland to pick it up on the 22nd.
It is just like the one that I bought new in 1978 while in college in Athens, Georgia. Apparently the SR is totally stock - I will probably want to do all the White Brothers/Joe Minton modifications that I had o my old number 1039.
I know a lot of things have changed - primarily availability of aftermarket parts, so I will depend upon the folks at this forum for a lot of advice.
I'll let you know how things go after I return home with the "new to me" SR.
Thanks --- Morgan

Hi, Welcome...how long is the trip? I like riding the SR's decent distances...a nice piece of sheepskin on the seat is an assett to your rear end... SR

"Welcome...how long is the trip?"
It is around 600 mile one way - I'm 100 miles SW of St. Louis. It's going in the van!
I'm no longer adventurous enough to fly to Cleveland and ride 28 year old motorcycle 600 miles through the Midwest at the end of October.
That's right...I'm a wuss!

I wasn't committed already (school, work, family), I'd offer myself as a hired rider! 'Course, with the size of the fuel tank, that would entail MANY stops! As my father would say, "use it in good health". We're happy for you.

Heh, heh.... When I bought my H model from a mate in Adelaide....about 850kms or so from here, I took the bus over and rode it straight back. In the bus all night, then had a shower while he made another exhaust bracket and headed straight on back. Great ride, I really enjoyed it. Needed the sheep skin though! I stopped at my parents place on the way back to change the bars to a pair of Darmah ones...the high bars were a tad too much like hard work. SR

Welcome to the fun! Long trips are cool on the SR, but those frequent gas stops really come in handy!

Well - I drove to Cleveland on the 20th, picked up the SR500 on the morning of the 21st and headed back to Missouri. It was 670 miles each way.
The guy I bought the bike from was waiting for me at the garage door. A really nice fellow, he helped me get the bike into our Dodge Caravan - backed it in and leaned it waaaaaay over to one side to get the speedo and tach through the back door. Once in the van, there was plenty of room to stand it upright. The beefy seat anchors in the floor were just right for strapping the bike in.
Anyway, the bike is absolutely stock. The only thing on the bike that wan't there when it was sold are the 3200 miles. It has been sitting a while and needs tires, carb overhaul, and work on the brakes.
I plan to modify it like the one I had back in the '70/80's but will make a point of keeping all the original parts in case I ever want to enter it into the Monterey Concours de Elegance - hah!
I have a ton of questions, so I'll move them to the other subject headings and get going on my winter tinker project.
Thanks for the warm welcome Morgan Bearden Rolla, Missouri
