I got my '78 SR500 in 1999, I'm the third owner. It was pretty trashed, so I ended up doing many mods like the WB carb kit, supertrapp exhaust, etc just in the process of replacing worn out components. Turned it into a cafe racer with clubman's bars, fast back seat, and rearsets at one point.
I got into dirtbikes in '01 and gave the bike to my father. He gave it back, and now I've put the stock pegs and seat back on, fit some Triumph bars that are really similar to stock, and am trying to set it up as a citybike. My days of peg dragging are over (I get my kicks offroad, right now waiting for my '07 KTM 450 to arrive) so I want the SR to be comfortable, fun transport.
I forgot how much I loved riding this bike- I don't love the loud pipe, heavy throttle, and heavy clutch though, so I've got a few things to sort out.

[glow=red,2,300]WELCOME TO THE SR500 FORUM![/glow]
Happy you found us! Looking forward to hearing more about your SR. The KTM sounds interesting as well. Is it offroad only, or can it be street ridden?
Take care and talk to you soon, G Man

G-man,
The SR was my first thumper, and got me hooked. I haven't owned a bike with "extra" cylinders since. When I first had it, I would spend Sunday mornings pretending upstate NY was the Isle of Man, with predictable results. Mark Apland sold me a lot of parts back then.
I set the bike up with wire wheels, and at one point had an alloy fuel tank and sidecovers from Kedo.com. The tank is long gone, but the sidecovers and wire wheels remain.
The KTM is 50-state DOT legal, but it's still a racebike with a plate. Oil changes every 15 engine hours, 2 filters replaced and 2 screens cleaned every third oil change. Valves every other oil change I think, etc. I rode an '06, and loved it. It RIPS in the woods AND it's quiet. Two-finger clutch, light throttle, etc.
But a whole different world than the SR. I wouldn't hesitate to ride the SR into the next time zone, but the KTM I'd want a chase truck.
I'm finally going to fit a rear rack, and the engine guards to my SR. Turn it into an urban pack mule.
