Hey, hello, the truck from Daily Direct dropped my eBay buy-it-now '78 SR500 off on Sunday night, and I'm a happy girl. I'd already picked up a '78 parts bike (with an extra engine) a few weeks back. The one I just got is an intriguing mix of components. . . the engine so far appears stock, but with a great honkin' carb that looks as if it would suck in stray cats if it wasn't covered with the biggest K&N I've ever seen. White Bros. (I believe) pipe with a stubby stainless Supertrapp. Lovely little aluminum turn signals. Heinously ugly plastic mirrors. Gunnar Gasser throttle. No front fender. Progressive rear shocks. Spool hubs laced to alloy rims. Low-pro Lucas taillight. A good long summer's worth of neglect. . . chronically underinflated Avons, slack shiny chain, clanking camchain. . . and with that huge carb on one end, closed-down end can on the other (CA inspection, don't ya know), the engine is crying out for help! Lots of potential here.
Me? I'm a 51-year-old registered nurse (orthopaedics), been riding since I was 15. My current daily rider/ commuter/ tourer is an '04 BMW R1100S; a practical, respectable machine for a middle-aged woman, but I found myself wanting a bike that was neither. Sold my '00 Ducati SS750 about a month ago- loved her dearly, but the maintenance was dearer still. Wanted something I was comfortable working on myself, and still (with care) grind up my kneesliders at NHIS track days. My partner is doing the same- sold her 748 and is sorting out a '73 RD350 (although my SR has her thinking about getting the parts bike on the road).
So, I'd love to hear from you all. . . if the bike sounds familiar (it came from the Bay Area), I'd love to hear from the former owner- which carb is that, anyway? And does anyone have a nice, undented, not-too-pitted stock fender?
