Hey folks, sorry for the newbie question. I'm sure you get tired of ones related to this, but I didn't find answers elsewhere. I'm hoping it will help me get the hang of starting if I can understand what's mechanically happening, so have some basic questions on the topic:
Thanks in advance for any help.
Background:
- Is window indication of ~Top-Dead-Center (TDC) or ~Bottom-Dead-Center (BDC)? (Discussions all seem to be of "TDC", but also seem to talk of being "against compression" which TDC would be the END of.)
- Does the window indicator move at crankshaft or camshaft rate? Said differently, will I get 2 indications on every four strokes (2 engine revolutions), so only half of the indications are good candidates for starting - or is every indication a candidate?
- Where exactly in the indication is the T/BDC? Start of indicator moving into the window, indicator just completes filling the window, middle of zone of window coverage, indicator just starting to move out of the window, just fully left the window, or what?
- Approximately how much of an engine revolution(s) does a full kick stroke drive?
- I assume the kick has to drive the engine through compression stroke over TDC to point of spark. (correct me if wrong) Does the kick also have to drive through intake too, or does slower motion of getting in position suffice for that?
Thanks in advance for any help.

- I did look and found a lot of helpful info on starting, but not specifically the questions above.
