I've decided to abandon the oem carb on my 80 sr500g and go with a new Mikuni vm34ss. Will be removing air box as I understand that has to go. I think the angled K&N filter that Mike has will also be required. Will I need a new throttle cable? 2in 1? Also, what about the manifold gasket? the original rubber "coupling" from carb to air box is still good. I have a new manifold gasket that was about $8 that I had planned to use w the 3h1 oem carb. Not sure if that will accommodate. While attempting to rebuild 3H1 the claw clip and screw for the float needle were rusted beyond reuse. I managed to remove screw after sawing a slot for flat head screwdriver. If I had those 2 pieces in hand today I would proceed to at least try original carb. Rather than postpone this project any further, I'm just going to see about a new VM34ss. Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Johnny, can you get a new 34ss ? If so it’s going to be seriously dearer than the aftermarket mikuni 34-168 (which is an excellent replacement and has the benefit of no rubber internals to perish or deteriorate)

Plenty of mikuni round slide carbys out there. Also if you get the carby from a reputable dealer they should have the specific cable as well. I have to say though, I love having the twin push/pull cables instead on the 2 into 1. I am currently running the vm34ss and runs like a dream. If it breaks down or I can't fix it will go round slide. Don't forget to jet the carby for the airpod and the exhaust as well.
