I deleted my post because I thought it had tmi. I’m working on getting my 1980 SR500G going again. I pulled the original 3H100 carb and want to rebuild it. I just got my OEM service manual, (replacement for the one I used to have years ago) so I know I need a VM32SS rebuild kit. I saw where vintage spoke has a rebuild/repair kit that also includes the diaphragms. I want to use quality parts and there’s a lot of other things available now that I’m not so sure about. Also, testing the stator and coil yesterday w ohm meter, I realized I have a bad coil. The stater oh med out good. I still need to see about the rectifier. I’m seriously considering the Vape kit which includes a coil, but for now I just need a coil that works and to rebuild this carb to see if I can get the bike started. 26 years ago I replaced the CDI but still had problems with the bike, which I now suspect could’ve been the stator overheating. I’m hoping with a replacement coil and rebuilt carb I can get it to fire up. from there, I plan on taking it to a buddy’s shop and have him go over motor with a minimum of rehoning/piston rings… I don’t really have a proper shop to get this thing in too many different pieces at one time, but I’m trying to do as much as possible to cut down on my cost for his labor. As long as the weather holds out, I’m gonna do as much as I can myself, but I’m in an outdoor setting.

I have rebuilt my vm34 with parts from mikunioz here in Australia. Once I can't do it anymore or need a new carby will go to the 36.

Thank you, Steve. Wasn't aware of that forum, so I just joined in! I've got a new coil and carb kit on the way. I've done a few carbs in my day, but mostly small engine stuff like riding mowers and such. I also successfully rebuilt the one barrel carb on an old 68 Chevy inline six once upon a time. I'm feeling fairly confident about tackling this vm32. The SR's piston was stuck after being parked 25 years. I drained what oil was in it, (about 1.5 qts) and then filled it to the very top with used 0w 20w that was handy. I let that sit for a day and the next day I stood on the kick and it came free. I have only cycled the piston 10-12 times at this point. The bike never used oil or smoked the 10 years I used it regularly, roughly 81-91.It was parked due to electrical probs not fuel. I'm not totally opposed to rebuilding motor. But what I'm thinking is adjusting oil to proper type/amount, getting it to start up just once them killing it right away and regroup. On that old 68 Chevy inline 6, I remember after I got it, we filled with as much kerosene as it would hold, let it soak and then turn the engine over a few times w/o coil wire. In that case it really helped that old motor a lot until I ultimately had a shop rebuild an identical core motor... I've read about an internal factory screen on SR's that are a real bear to remove. My thought is, if I can remove that successfully, then possibly trying the kerosene flush on the SR, reinstall screen, new oil/filter.... Still sorting it all out and trying not to get to far ahead of myself, but it's going to be a fun journey. I'm a little better "shade tree mechanic" than I was 30 years ago!

If you're going to loosen/remove the frame downtube filter, have a friend (the larger the better) on hand to hold the plot steady and a length of scaffold tube to increase leverage on the spanner. Those things do come free all of a sudden, pitching you into the weeds when they do. Chances are it'll be gunked up so well worth doing once.

Don't waste your money on that POS carb! I think I will probably go with a vm34ss whenever I can get to that point; still troubleshooting electrical system. Wouldn’t want to go any more over the stock 32mm from all I’ve read. As far as my learning has taken me, I think that I would have to replace the throttle cable and also eliminate the air box for a K&N angled filter. Is this the carb that needs an intake manifold with a port? Also, can you tell me if eliminating the air makes it “louder”? I thought I’d read that somewhere recently, but I can’t understand how that could be.
