Hi Mates--I'm trying to find out what's genuine on my SR500, the back mudguard looks genuine but it's looks too short, it has rear set's and gear change linkage that also looks genuine,, and what about the speedo / tacho meters? --- also what happens when the Alt' stator fails mines not open cicuit resistance around 4-5 ohms, but the plug/socket have been dissconected--Thanks for any replies

Fairly straightforward I expect to get a 1985 stator rewound, (it's 1993 models that were a bit unusual,) but how easy it is to find someone to do it for you in Oz, I don't know.
Back mudguard looks genuine but shortened. Indicators and clocks are non standard. (The standard clocks are fixed to a shaped plate.) The short rear brake lever looks like the factory item, which would then match the rearsets you describe.

Hi Steve--Thanks for the comments, I thought the/guard had been shortend but it hasn't and I can see the marks where the original r/lamp was, can't see how it passed inspection though, all the foot rests match and look original could they have rear sets as original?, I forgot to say --it's a 1985 private Japanese import into Australia --Barry

Yes, they did and my SR looked just like yours, same paint scheme and had factory fitted rearsets. It also had the narrow bars, wire wheels drum brakes and alloy top yoke & camchain adjuster cover. Quite sought after model, with all the frills. See the diagram for item 1 on the list, showing the 2 types of footrests: standard and for rearset controls. www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/6253967/sr400-3ht5-1993-010-a/footboard-and-stand

Hi Steve--Thanks for the tips and link, it's very handy, I hope to get the bike started today, not that much compression, but I hope that might improve with a couple of laps around the block, if the stator is faulty I would have a go at rewinding myself, not that I have ever done one before but have repaired them in the past, Also I'm Velocettes, Venom and Viper, I like the big singles--Barry

Hi Steve--Thanks for the links they will be a great help, I got the bike going last Friday, a lot quieter that I was expecting, also I changed the oil, it was very thin and also very clean, by the way I'm from the Wirral in Cheshire, been here in Australia for 50 years--Barry

I'm curious to know if your native Wirral accent has been modified with an Oz twang over the years, Barry! The SR runs nice and quiet on 20/40 but I don't know if that's appropriate to where you are, if it gets really hot. I'm south coast of England, so first thing I did was get some good old 20/40 in there and quieten the thing down. That and Kedo's flatball valve adjuster screws made a good deal of difference. I could always tell when it needed new oil as the top end got a bit noisy. That Rex's ignition guide has all the resistance checks to see if your stator is in spec, so I hope it's useful.

Hi Steve--The mudguard was cut, they cut 8" of the front off then slid it up, I got a a section off on old guard and replaced the cut bit, back to normal now, I haven't lost my accent, but I would sound like an Austrailian to you, but not to the locals--Barry
