Hi Chaps--I bought a non-runner 1984 SR500 Japanese import last week, looks like not used that much and still original paint, not running yet but I was happy with the buy, but I was talking to my mate last night, he had bought a late '70's one brand new and had lot's of problems, ie, stater and oil pump packed up and other stuff,he said due to vibration? he had it all repaired under waranty, then sold it, my question is did they improve the vibration problems (if that what the problem was) with later ones?--Barry

My stator failed on my '78 at 40,000 miles. CDI failed at 80.000 miles, way unreliable machines! Oh yeah, bent a valve running 85 mph in 105* F. heat. P'sOS for sure.

Once everything was in spec, I noticed how stable the settings tended to be, whether it was valves or camchain adjustment. Barely needing any change from one service interval to the next. Even the final drive chain.
I'd say the SR is an incredibly reliable bike. The vibes are more noticeable on a 500 than a 400 that's for sure, but never really heard of vibes being an issue in terms of affecting the reliability of key components.
From the off, I did find the vibes on my 400 were very bad in 3rd with standard sprockets, but they didn't stay on the bike for long. I went up a tooth on the front cog and down a tooth on the back (making it 20/55) and it transformed the whole ride. 3rd wasn't buzzy anymore and it was a real improvement. No idea why they put the 400 out with that final gearing, 19/56 on 428 chain, since it was so easily improved on.
