I have a 78 SR 500 that was a barn find that I rebuilt last year, it sat for a year and now after cleaning the carb completely it will start but once warmed up it starts missing and then dies. Carb is new and was jetted correctly and ran fine until it sat for that time. Any ideas? I dont feel its carburation....It has a 36 Mikuni VM.

Double check all your jets. Also check your intake manifold and the exhaust manifold. Sounds like a air leak.

My money would be on contaminated fuel.Drain it all off, take the tank off and flush out with fresh fuel, fill up and start again.

To add to Andy's point: petrol is no longer what it used to be, all that ethanol now and other additives. Once I'm sure you could park a bike in the shed and resurrect it ten years later with the same fuel. Them days are long gone!!!
