I’m perhaps being a bit lazy and should look into this problem a bit deeper. Is there much pressure built up in the sump cover area when the bikes running ? For quite a while I’m noticing a bit of oil collecting around the sump plug (doesn’t build up overnight when the engine is off). I don’t want to tighten the plug anymore and I’m almost taking the cover off to try to find a hairline crack maybe 🤔, it is a die cast component…that could have a fault. Cheers all.

Did you try a new washer or annealing the old one?

thanks red, I've put a new copper washer washer when I did the top end job a while back. Last night I tightened it up a bit more so I'll see how it goes from here [daren't give it any more ]. It might be a case of removing it completely and investigating.

I bet with a new gasket on the sump strainer cover you'll be oil tight again. Once removed a few taps with a screwdriver will tell you if the cover has a hairline crack from the sound it makes. Let's hope it's not that!! Always hated oil changes on the SR. They're such a faff compared to wet sump machines.

Cheers all, the next couple of rides will reveal all, I'm not putting any more pressure on the sump plug. Gave it a good clean allround the cover area. Hope its not got a crack/fault, bloody expensive for what they are. Should have m/c'd a few up on the CNC machining centre before I retired.Kedo and Motollana do a billet replacement if I'm forced down that road . So am I right in thinking the oil is not under pressure in that area ?

It wouldn't make engineering sense to design a cover like that for an area under pressure. Besides it would have been a regular point of failure and a gripe on message boards. Isn't it just an oil return gallery?

Think I might have been a bit of a pillock . A few years back I stripped the sump thread and removed the sump to recut a bigger thread and our centre lathe turner made me a new brass plug to suit. I’ve got this feeling the new thread in the sump isn’t dead square to the sealing face 🤔. Looks like it’s coming off for another analysis 🧐. Steve, agreed, why would there be pressure in there😳

I see a red fibre washer in your future. That'll do the job.
