I've decided to expand on my introduction in the Welcome Mat here in the SR400 EFI General discussion instead.
So, my initial findings with the new bike :
One of the P.O.s had put on some choice bits (no complaints there...):
Good things indeed, for reliability, if nothing else.
My changes so far:
After all this, I still feel I need a bit more 'go' in case I have to hurry up over a couple hundred Autostrada miles to catch the ferry. So not ruling out getting a less restrictive silencer just yet.
Going down to the Wye Valley on Sunday riding with the other half on her '66 Triumph TR6 150 mile round trip. She's still running it in after a total rebuild but that'll tell me what's still lacking.
More updates soon.
So, my initial findings with the new bike :
One of the P.O.s had put on some choice bits (no complaints there...):
Good things indeed, for reliability, if nothing else.
My changes so far:
- I've added a Hepco & Becker rear carrier - essential for luggage but filthy expensive and the only aftermarket one with fittings designed for SR400 that I could find out there. It is, at least, top quality (better be, for that money!). Goes well with my classic 70s Swagman throwovers that you still get for £30 on Fleabay if you look hard - love those panniers.
- I decided to fit a small electronic unit from Poland for £71, apparently designed for the SR400. It's the size of a matchbox, has an on/off switch and a single brass screw to make adjustments and fits in parallel with the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor, once I found it in all that mess where the big lead acid battery used to be in the olden days, it was really hard to get to. But the unit went in and... well, is it 'Emperors new clothes' or does it make a difference? They say it takes 100 miles or so for it to recalibrate (hmm, suspicious maybe?) but I think I could tell the difference straight away and I do believe the throttle response is better. Don't think it's a con - you can tell from the documentation that they're ridiculously pleased with themselves for achieving the hack in such simple fashion. At least it's not the several hundred it would cost for a PCV box so worth a punt.
- I've changed the gearbox sprocket up from 19T to 20T to make it less revvy. Hasn't hit that 'rapid rise' Rev limiter in lower gears quite so readily but it won't pull easily through 60mph in top.
- I got a 55T rear sprocket to replace the 56T std one (was 19T/56T) but it won't make as much difference as the 20T front one if I fit it - the chain was nearly new and I got it simply in case the chain wouldn't reach with the 20T g'box sprocket, but it wasn't needed and so not worth changing yet.
After all this, I still feel I need a bit more 'go' in case I have to hurry up over a couple hundred Autostrada miles to catch the ferry. So not ruling out getting a less restrictive silencer just yet.
