I just acquired a 1980 SR500 project that won't start. The PO told me the bike has a bad stator. My testing verifies that the stator is indeed bad, and I'm amazed at the absolute lack of good used replacements available. What's my best option? Have it rewound? If so, who does a good job? Time is not an issue for me, and I'm willing to pay for quality work! Thanks.

Try Kedo parts. They sell replacement gear for the SR

Thanks, I called the office line on Custom Rewind's website earlier this week...haven't heard back yet. I'll try his cell later.
Also found two other outfits that offer rewinds - Regulator Rectifier in California and Rick's Motorsport Electrics in New Hampshire.
Anybody here have any experience with any of these three outfits?

Worth calling Reg/Rec in Cali to ask what experience they have with SR rewinds. On the Ricks situation, this is where I wish we still had access to the old forum. I don't want to bad mouth this particular Rick as he may well not be the culprit, but on the old forum there was a rewind done by a Rick (again, I have no idea if it was this guy,) and it had to be sent back several times for the job to be done right. The pulse coil pick up came back all bent and the wiring looked really crudely done. I'm not sure how that worked out in the end but it caused our forum member no end of trouble. Ideally, whoever rewinds your stator needs some experience of the SR. I do hope you find a good solution!

When I Google search Custom Rewinds, some of the search results say "Custom Rewinds (Permanently Closed)" so I'm hoping theyve not gone out of business as that limits your choices. We did have folk (on the old forum) who had used them, but I can't recall what the feedback was on the results. If you're willing to risk sending your parts in the mail to the UK, we have an SR electronic expert, Rex's Speedshop based in Robertsbridge, East Sussex. They would be worth emailing or speaking to. The shipping and potential loss in transit is your concern there but I can vouch for his work. Www.Rexs-speedshop.com

I had Custom Rewind do my stator a few years back and it has been great, I would definitely recommend them if they are still in business.

I just found my invoice from Custom Rewind for a refurbish of my high speed coil from March 2010 No problems since they did the work.

I really wanted to give Custom Rewind a try, but they never returned my voicemails. I had read about the horror story one SR owner had going round and round with Rick's a number of years back. From my experience on other (mainly Honda) forums, I knew that Rick's is the gold standard for regulator/rectifier upgrades, and has a reputation for quality of work. I talked to them and they assured me that they had plenty of experience with the SR500 stator. I sent the stator to them, they called me when they received it to verify the work I needed done, and quoted me 2-3 weeks lead time. I couldn't believe it when the UPS guy delivered the rewound stator last Saturday - exactly one week after I sent it off! Yesterday I had a bike therapy day in the garage - I tested the contacts with my voltmeter, reinstalled the stator and the rest of the ignition system, grounded the plug to the cylinder and turned out the lights. I gave the kick-starter a stab and saw spark! What a relief! It's my understanding that this is what took this bike off the road years ago, and the reason the last owner sold it to me. Total cost for the job came to $307 including quick shipping. And no, they didn't have to touch the high or low speed coils, just the source coils. Next up, the mailman just dropped off my carb rebuild kit. I'll be starting a new thread in the Carby section...

Thanks for the update, Pops! IToo bad about Custom Rewind! But the info about Ricks is useful for sure!
And I hope your SR starts on the first kick when you get your carb back on!
