Hi Hunter: Welcome to the forum. Always did like the SRX. Almost bought one in '86 when they came out, but ended up going with the FZ600 instead. Always regretted that decision. While I am a big fan of the SRX and also work in a Yamaha dealership, I haven't had any hands on experience with the SRX. I won't be of much help except to provide OEM info and detail spec's etc... The SRX may be considered an evolved version, but it is very different from our beloved SR. Perhaps other members may have(had) one and may be able to offer guidance. Mike C has one (see pic in photo album). Hit him up for info! ;D
Looking forward to hearing from you soon, G Man

Hi Hunter, I forgot to ask where do you hail from? I'm in Melbourne, Australia. There are many Internet sites with information on the Yamaha SRX. You can do a search in Google just to get some idea. For great exploded diagrams and parts lists try: www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/parts/home.aspxChoose motorcycles/SRX-6/1986 on the top menue... Then choose the part you want to look at from the menu on the left. Cheers, MikeC.

Hi Hunter,
Do not force the motor to turn over!
Take the plug out and put a spoon full of oil in the plug hole and mybe a squirt or two of CRC, You do not want to score the cylinder.
Apply a little force to the kick start if it does not move, try heating up the motor with a butane torch, but be very carful you dont want to melt anything, if it still does not move, I'm afraid you will have to strip it down...
By the way did you get an Owners Manual with the bike?
There is a workshop manual on the Internet which you can download but I will have to look up the address for you. The workshop manual you got through EBAY, was it a hard copy or a CD?
Cheers, MikeC.

Hi Mike Yes i did get my manual and would you beleave that it is the same as you have just put up word for word thanks for all the info i was just a few weeks late . Now the weekend got out there first thing oil and heat in hand , i put the oil in and let it sit in there for a few hours and tryed to crank it over ........ no way that it was going to move so i then brought out the flame !!!!! i felt that this was going to work what a great idea i was thinking i had the motor HOT nothing on fire so i jumped on the kick start fully expecting it to move ........... but alas NO I tryed it again and nothing so i made up my mind to take off the head and have a look and do you think that i could move the bloody bolts no way ....... so what i have done is i have started to take the whole motor out and have a look and do a full rebuild i am almost there i will have to make a stand to put the bike on because the down tube that has to be removed also has the side stand on it but that will have to wait till next weekend but what that will do is give me a chance to have really good look at what has to be done what i have managed to get some parts from the the local dealer to contine doing other work like the front brakes slave and master kits they were also in a very bad way the more that i look at it the more work i am going to do it will not be a quick fix it will be a long term project but that is fine with all your help it will be a a great deal of fun............... I THINK Thanks again Mike if you have any ideas on all the tasks ahead please let me know cheers Hunter

Hi Hunter,
I also have an SRX6. Love the bike. It is much used, previously unloved. The Victorian Motorcycle wreckers have been very helpful to me in getting parts needed (wheels brake parts). They are top operators located in Heidleberg. One of the guys there, Andy Bremner is involved in singles racing and there is LOTS of advice and connections there to people who will do performance mods. I've had no trouble getting regular bits from Yamaha. Another good source of bits is netbikes.com.au. They are able to take lots of the legwork out of finding bits and I've used them. They're quick, you can do it all over the 'net, and the parts arrive by post. A great service. Check out the THMPERSTUFF web page (I've only looked-no experience), OR the SR500 club. Good luck, JSTAVA

Hi Hunter,
Sorry, but I have been out of action for the last month, I spent Christmas in hospital and am still having problems, I have to back in for another op later this week so it could be some time before I am riding again!
How are you going with the SRX I hope you are making some progress. If you are having trouble with parts, I have found that som models of the RZ 250/350 have the same breaks/wheels etc. Also for engine parts there is a trail bike with the same motor I think it is the XL600.
That was handy info from JSTAVA as well!
Cheers, Mikec.

Hi Hunter,
My mechanic friend has worked out a method which requires undoing the nuts that hold the barrel to the crankcase and extracting the piston from the bottom:
Remove side cover rotor side. With a socket and bar you can now turn the crank. depending on where the piston sits in the bore move one way or other , the barrel and piston should now lift itself off the base gasket (NOW WE HAVE REMOVED ALL THE BASE SCREWS BEFORE HAND).Now depending how high the piston and barrel as stroked itself off the crankcase.Put two bits of wood to sit barrel on.Use socket and bar to turn rotor clockwise.Use a jerking motion and it should move(plenty CRC) Using thicker bits of wood the idea is to use the pistons own stroke to remove itself from the bore. Thats how i do it . Good luck
I hope this helps!
Cheers, Mike (I am feeling a lot better thanks.)

There is another thing that may assist you to get that piston moving and it is to spAry some penetrating oil into the plug hole and leave it there for a few days.
Unfortunately I don't remember the brand name, but I used to have a spray pack of something like Penetrene that used to allow you to undo rusted on bolts etc.
It was really effective stuff, but of course I eventually used it all up. Vastly superior to stuff like WD40 and RP7 etc.
