I've had two SRs, my first one was also a '78 that had minimal, tasteful mods from an older gentleman rider in St Paul. I purchased it in 1991 and owned it for a couple years. Braided steel brake lines, custom Corbin seat, cafe fairing, progressive fork springs and Marzocchi shocks. Minton mods on the stock carb, with oversized headpipe and supertrapp muffler. It was cherry and pretty dialed, low miles and I think it was his 3rd SR. Wish I'd kept it. No photos exist, motos came and went quickly for me in the 90s (several GPZs).
This one was rougher when I found it, and I had bigger plans for it. It had spent some time outside in a few Minnesota winters, lots of rusty fasteners/fittings. It has 540cc wiseco piston, supertrapp exhaust, high flow oil lines, progressive springs and shocks. Carb was mostly dialed. I put it back together, rode it a bit, then did a half-assed cosmetic job. Blasted and powdercoated some of the rusty brackets, wheels and shock lowers. All those parts are satin black. Repaint on the tank, gloss black. Rode it a bit, and it sat in a friend's garage as I was working on a Ducati Monster M900.
Now that the Monster is mostly sorted, I've moved the SR to the same location and disassembled it. Just dropped off the frame, swingarm, triples, bash guard and exhaust at the sandblaster. Frame and swingarm I'm thinking will be satin dark grey, kind of like the Lossa Solus SR500. Bike will end up pretty dark and monochrome, black, grey and dull shiny bits except for rear shocks and front fender. Exhaust will be cerakoted. Gold logos on tank, gold front caliper and rotor carrier. Engine covers and some other alloy bits will be vapour blasted and cleared, headlight brackets polished alloy, rear fender stainless. Prob a little bikini windscreen over the polished headlight.
I'm going to post some pix here if I can figure it out.

Posting some pix here. You can see that I've gone with brembo front caliper, nice master cylinder, fzr1000 rotor with Motolanna bracket. Also that I kept the Marzocchi shocks from my first SR Love the splash of orange. I think I'll paint the new front fender orange to match. I need to either unseize the stock rear caliper, or figure out different bracket and stay rod for the rear brembo that came with the front set! Will be drilling the rear rotor or finding a replacement. Had to make a tool to get the swingarm bearing cartridges out. They didn't want to move with me punching through the axle void with a drift, it just rounded the inner lip of the cartridge retainer that barely stands proud of the swingarm. The bearings weren't terrible, but I already had a spare set and easier to blast and powdercoat the swingarm with them out. If any of you have a Cal Fab swingarm laying around...

i have a box full of "stuff" that I've been saving for this bike, mostly from thumperstuff. Battery eliminator, oil cooler, various new rubber iso mounts to replace the worn/devulcanized original bits. I've also replaced the ignition coil and rectifier from Ricks, and have newly rebuilt stator. Lots of fasteners and little bits that need cleaning up, glad to have parts washer with circ pump that pushes solvent through a brush head. Attachments:

Things I haven't sorted out yet: - Seat is original- should I send it out and have it refoamed and covered, or buy a new one? Going for stockish cafe look, shorter front and rear fenders, low superbike bar, stock tank.
- Take the gauges apart, clean the interiors and replace seals? Refinish the exteriors? Chrome is pretty beat
- Rear brake as noted above
- Turn signals - stock are OK looking with a bit of polish, would prefer smaller/brighter
- Keep the stock front and rear footpegs?
- Front fender? Want something shortish, and will paint it orange, so stainless not great option. Also, will run a forged fork brace above the fender.
- Just clean the engine? Polish the cases? Not many miles/hours since the overbore rebuild, don't really want to crack it open.
Also, winter seems to be passing Minnesota by this year, so my "winter hours" for this project are shrinking with each addl warm day. Currently 53 degrees on Feb 6, another record warm day.

Nice project. I grew up in Int'l Falls, a long time ago.

A well seized swing arm is a nightmare. Good to see you won that particular battle. I envy your workshop facility for this project and I like the subtlety of your proposed colour scheme. The touches of gold will look great against the black/dark grey. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
Soda blasting gives some nice finish options on the outer cases, or just bright polish, knocked back a shade. Lots of new seat options out there but a well recovered original seat with a contrasting piping looks good too. Goes with the subtle theme.

My workshop facility is a big moto collective work/storage space in the Twin Cities. Has lots of great shared tools. I ended up there because Ducati tuner Doug Lofgren works out of it. I needed some tuning done on the Monster, and one thing led to another...

Quick turnaround from the sandblaster! Immediately dropped the bits off at the powdercoater, except for the header and exhaust. Powdercoat says will be done next Wednesday. Powdercoat and blasting within one mile of each other, very convenient! Which, btw, the sandblaster couldn't get coating off the exhaust. Long story, called "flame spraying" - will have to try something else to get it off. Attachments:

Watch out for grit from sandblasting in the frame's oil tank!!! Will you be flushing it through & drying it out with heat to remove any moisture?

Great point!
We plugged all the gallies into the frame oil tank before sand blasting. I'll have to assess when i pick up the stuff from the powder coater.

Worked through 45 years of baked on grease/dirt/road grime on the motor today. Engine cleaner works miracles! Also figured out that I forgot to bring the centerstand to the sandblaster, so I did that myself. Also tried out the vapor blaster on the magneto/flywheel cover. More pix tomorrow hopefully. Pieces back from the powder coater. Finish looks good! Now time to start assembling (and keep cleaning the original fasteners and unpainted parts). Attachments:

Lighter grey than I thought it would be, giving a stronger contrast with your black parts. Always exciting to see a build with a non black frame. Keep the pics coming! (Did you loosen the frame filter at the base of the downtube either before or after the coating? Needs to be investigated before running the machine in case it's choked with goo.)
