Hi all, just a quick question, can I use a SR500 front disc for the SR400. Mine is a 1984 model. Just can't seem to find any discs for the 400 at all.

Hi, I'm going to say probably not, based on these two part searches I have done: www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/4039647/sr500-2j4-1978-999/front-brake-caliperwww.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/4178471/sr400-3hth-2003-010-a/front-brake-assembly(Hope you're able to see these two links!) Basically the 500 disc has an offset: from where the disc attaches to the hub to the running surface is offset by maybe 10 or 15mm at a guess. While the 400 disc looks as if there is nil offset, a flat disc based on the view in the parts diagram. There is also the question of whether your disc is original to the 400 or is a mod and comes from a 500. I couldn't find a 400 from around 1984, that had a disc. They all seem to have drums on the front, up until the much later model 400s. Post a pic of what you have?

What I'm trying to say, very badly, is that from what I can tell, by the time 400s were fitted with discs the disc design was very different from the much earlier discs fitted to 500s. (Phew!) Edit: But then I've gone and found this.... www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_sr400%2082.htm...so maybe this bears closer resemblance to the typical disc found on a 500?

It has a offset brake disc. my old SR had a straight disc. I would have loved a drum front as they look nicer IMO. From what I can tell I think it is a 500 disc as a lot of other parts on the bike are 500 as well. It is a frame and engine number of a 1984 SR400 LTD, yet has a 500 top end, 500 carby on it and 500 wiring. If it is a 500 disc, pictures attached, does it matter what year disc I get? I am in Australia so more than likely go with KEDO parts Australia or a brake company called Metal gear that also do 500 brakes.

I agree, the 500 disc is a round piece of steel with no cooling and vents. That website does look like mine. However, again mine is modified, as the carby on mine is NOT a VM32.

Agree yours looks very much like the standard item you'd see on a 500 in which case, looking at my printed Kedo catalogue, you should be able to get a direct replacement. They've got left and right fitting discs of that type.
