Hi All, I have a 1984 Yamaha SR400. According to the rego paperwork it is. However, the chain is 520, same with the sprockets, 16 and 44, however for the year it should be 428 and 19 front and 55 rear which is what I ran on my 2001 SR400. The wiring on the bike also does not line up with the SR400 wiring from the engine side. It does match the SR500 wiring. The carby is a massive flat slide Mikuni. The head of the bike is also black, while the engine is all Silver aluminium. Would definitely say it is a different head on the bike.
At a well educated guess, the previous owner has swapped out the head and piston, bumped up the 400 to a 500 and messed with the wiring. it has no original indicators, headlight or speedo. Aftermarket exhaust and carby.
It was a project bike after all. Just working out what is what so I know what I am working with.
As soon as I sat on the bike and test rode it, I knew this had power as it felt faster than my previous SR400.

Hi Pete, did you see the Link to SR500 Identification Chart in the Suspension Chassis & Brakes section? It will help confirm you have a 400 rather than a 500 and what year it is. Going to be a fun project regardless. Keep us updated especially while it's too d**n cold and miserable to ride here in the UK.

Hi, did the research and it is a 400 from the numbers on the frame and engine. However has 500 parts on it and upgrades. A fun project. Will try and post a few more while your in winter over there and it is sunny here.
