Hello guys, New to this, my Wife's Grandpa just passed and he gave me his SR500. we are not sure exactly what year it is thinking between 78-80, but we can not find the key for it. what is the best way to get a key made? or do I need to pull out the whole ignition slot and get it all new?

Alex, this must be a coincidence !!! only yesterday I went for a ride and because my ignition key is/was so worn it jumped/vibrated out of the barrel and it wasn't until I got home did I realise it was gone !
Back to your problem,if its the original barrel there should be a number on the top collar/bezel. It should then be straightforward to order replacement. If you get stuck let me know although I found a company on the internet. Key2code [u.k company].

That is a great thing to be given by your grandfather, and no doubt he was pleased to do this. Speaking as a grandfather myself, I'd advise using some lube on the key when you get it, as I've had keys get really stuck in the ignition on bikes that have not been used in a long time. The hardware sells small spray cans formulated for locks , but I use WD40 in a pinch, it doesn't take much. Good luck with getting this bike going, and I'm hoping to see some photos!

Old farmers trick is to get a old HB pencil. Shave the lead off that into the ignition barrel. Helps to stop loose keys coming out of the barrel.

It'd be great to order a good one. I checked my ignition barrel and don't see any numbers anywhere.

I’m stumped Scotty, no number on the old key ? You might get your old one copied OR send it to the key company ? Failing that your faced with a new barrel , not a major problem, there’s plenty out there.
