Looks well cared for and a lot of details have been improved. Should be a good ride! I always feel envy when I see two tone tank paint from the factory, that bypassed us mostly here on this side of the Atlantic.

Thanks! The two tone tanks were slightly later issue I believe (mines 1993.) Whereas US and Canadian issue bikes were all from the early years, 78 to around 81. Does that sound about right? UK bikes were all 500s from that era. Mines a Japanese import 400.
Edit: the hagon shocks transformed the handling even though they took a while to get used to, they're quite soft.

I put Gazi HyperX on my '81, What A Diff! And all external adj. for length, pre-load, comp and rebound. Sweet

Edit: the hagon shocks transformed the handling even though they took a while to get used to, they're quite soft. The Hagons were my first clue about what to look for on this bike and I wasn't disappointed. Nice details in critical places. My 80 SR had aftermarket shocks when I bought it, I forget the brand, but well known, not Koni. After riding it a while, I discovered that one shock was broken, the shaft was snapped at the lower end. Being broke, I got a pair of used shocks from a Yamaha Radian and ran them for years before they lost most of their damping. It was only then, and after trying some Chinese shocks (which were disasters) that I put on a pair of YSS. I have to admit these shocks have raised my confidence in the handling a surprising amount, Also raised is my enjoyment of the rides!

Andy I know what you mean about the gaiters but the factory ones rub the chrome. These leather protect the exposed chrome from stone chips! I've fitted them in one form or another to all my bikes. Part of my DIY input.
Red, the SR is very pleasing on the eye as a piece of industrial design. To butcher the well known quote about god: If the SR didn't exist it would be necessary to invent it.

It was looking at clean old BSA's on ebay that made me realise the fins can look nice too. Attachments:
