My hard down and slide left my nice N-R Performance left rearset and shifter mangled. I had opted for a non-folding footpeg thinking it would make for a slider, which it did until it broke off.....then it slid on the shifter pivot and shift peg, that bending the shift lever back into bellcrank rod and jamming it all together.
Since I cant find anything about N-RP or Ken anymore it looks like replacement parts are NA so salvaging what I can became important.
Once I got feeling good enough to futz with it I got the assembly off the bike and tore it down; ie, "disassemble and inspect".
Ken had made the mount for the footpeg to backing plate a 'breakaway' design, that it did. I think Id have been better off with a folding peg but wouldnt really know unless I had one and did a similar down and slide; NOT! So that is just speculatin on my part.
So I fixed the peg assembly, then the shifter pivot head, just finishing up finally lost the belt on my old 1947? 12x36 Atlas lathe. Guess I got my money/time out of the likely original (I got it used from the orig owner's estate about 40ish years ago).
That left the well bent backing/mount plate and shift lever, flat stock pieces milled to shape. I didnt want to attempt cold bends and risk cracking (alum work hardens more at each time bent) so I annealed them in the oven at 550*f for 1 hr sitting in an old cast iron fry pan; prepped my press and tools and once the timer went off I tonged them out into a cold pan and went to the shop.
Gotta say, they worked back into shape so easy and smooth it was amazing; I highly recommend it!
Just finished up redrilling and countersinking for the new shift peg, still need to re-round the nose of the lever, but may wait until I get a road test behind me to finish up the cosmetics. That is all to say it is ready to bolt back up and give a go.
Btw, this has taken hours to do, futzy but mostly nice benchwork; been a long time since I did any, feels good . Just wish it had not been a crash to get me back at it.....
