I came across this bike - listed as a 1978 Yamaha. The vin looks like a 78 SR500, the engine number matches the neck. Obviously this frame looks nothing like the sr500 bikes I've built before. Someone has put a Honda hawk sss on it, the front wheel says Honda also so I assume the forks are too. Has anyone seen this frame before? Thanks for any leads Garett @dubstyledesigns on ig.

Is it maybe an SRX? No, I see they have dual shocks, wasn't there some trick 'made in England' limited custom run? Frankenbike? With that much work into reframing my guess is that engine is all tricked out.

Ya I thought maybe the sxr also at first but then looked up and it’s not quite the same. The oil in the backbone looks just like the sr, but the “perimeter” frame is what’s throwing me off. Plus the upright brackets at the back are aluminum and look like an actual product, someone must has spent some actual time.

Provenance! you need provenance, if somebody of note made or rode this you may have a diamond. If not you still have a gem but it will need, and deserves, a nice rebuild.

In my reply to your welcome mat post, I asked for the frame number. Well I can see now it's not an SR, although oil in frame. (I have now posted a link for identifying SR frames by country/year.)
What is the frame number of this mystery beast? There must be something that will help with manufacturer. I can tell you it's not Suzuki Bandit or Honda XR400 but I guess you knew that!
Is this now in your possession? I'm betting Honda.

Yes, I couldn’t pass it up for $200. The frame starts with 2j2-000 as does the number stamped on the engine. I know someone handy with a stamp could redo numbers - but this one looks pretty legit. The backbone looks exactly like my ‘80 sr with the obvious exception of the extra “perimeter” frame on each side.

Since 2J2-000 is the top line on the chart, it started life as a 1978 US model SR500E and someone has spent a great deal of time and effort: kedopartsaustralia.com/sr400-sr500-model-id/ Good luck with your renovation work, and please keep us up to date as work progresses. Looks like an unusual project!

Yes obviously first step will be to get it apart and see exactly what I have here. I have a couple rd projects to complete before I get into this one but I’ll update on here as soon as I get going on it. In the meantime if anyone comes across any info I’d love to hear it.
