All,
I recently picked up a 2016 SR400 FI after having a lot of enjoyable years on one of its larger ancestors.
My family built and raced ‘78 TT500’s for about 5 years, and I have some basic knowledge about the early XTs as well. We weren’t running a hot rod shop by any means, but there was a wealth of information available among the racing community. We enjoyed tuning our suspension, and really dialing the bikes in the excel at different tracks.
A quick look at the SR400 FI tells me there are some significant differences between this bike and its predecessors. My Dad and I pored over it today after taking it around town for test rides.
We both enjoyed how mellow and fun the bike feels just tootling around town.
We also noticed some things that could stand to be changed.
What information, if any, from the early bikes applies to these new fuel injected 400’s?
Is there suspension part compatibility between this frame and other Yamaha's?
Do other modern bikes share parts, systems or measurements with the SR400 FI?
For example, is the emissions system from another bike?
Did they borrow this FI system from other road going bikes?
What tips and tricks from other bikes have you brought to your SR400 FI?
As a summary question, are there other Yamaha communities that contain useful info that is relevant to the SR400 FI?

A lot of folk use the FB forum, but to me it's a fast moving river that fails to satisfy. I prefer static threads you can refer back to, like this forum. If you looked up the SR400 EFi fuel/ignition systems parts you could see what other bikes if any they were used in. Somewhere like www.cmsnl.com/Based on owners reports on the other (now defunct,) version of this forum, California versions used especially restrictive emissions control parts that people tended to remove. Generally, chassis-wise, the 400 bears close similarity to the 500. (Essentially the same frame.) Suspension wise, you could look at XS650 forks as being a fit.

Hey n2lDo you know if a FI sr400 engine will fit in an older model sr400 with a carbureted engine?

Hi Pablomatic, welcome to the forum!
You've probably noticed now that n2l has only ever posted one time, back in July 2023.
What's the reason you need to do this? Have you blown up the motor on an older machine and looking for modern replacement?
Is the idea to use literally just the motor from the FI machine and make it carburated? Or do you want to bring the FI & all the related sensors etc across to the non FI bike? (Harder to do in my opinion.)
The engine block from an FI model will fit the frame of an older 400, and you could fit a carb to it. The electrical output may need careful consideration, in terms of matching up the connectors from the stator on the FI motor to the older machine's electrical harness. Or maybe you could try and keep the stator plate & flywheel from the older machine and fit it onto the FI motor, if it will fit.
Either way, I think you're going to need to be quite creative and somewhat expert in the electrical department.
Remember that the older machine will have very different electrical components compared to those on the FI machine.
More questions than answers for you I'm afraid, but if you clarify your situation, forum members may be able to offer some good advice!
