Hello All
I fell in love with a 1983 SR 500 2 years ago and bought it online without going to see it due to distance. Have not been disappointed. Love this bike. Like travelling back in time when I ride it. Alas, I have started a bit of restoration. I want to add in a battery into the electrical circuit and upgrade indicators and headlight to LED. If anyone has any good info for a beginner it would be appreciated.
Thanks, Philip

Hi Philip, first off I'm no expert on electrics but have you got a Haynes workshop manual or Clymer ? The SR has a battery hidden behind the l/h side panel/cover. Has someone replaced yours with a capacitor ? I'm old school and much prefer a battery to a capacitor.
Regards, Andy

Ive been running a capacitor for years with NO troubles and do not miss having to maintain or replace another battery! Ymmv

Do you lights still work ok on tick over ?
It has always put me off using a capacitor as I read somewhere that your lights go really dim waiting at traffic lights while on tick over etc
Is that the case ? 🤔

Fwiw, The ignition of the SR500 is independent of the rest of the charging circuit, unlike my old '63 Triumph TR6 that I changed the stator to 12v when the oem 6v burned out. I didnt even use a cap on that, the 305 Honda dual lead coil I used fired both cyl at the same time, one on comp the other on ex. My lights do dim at idle, that has never been an issue to me because I started in the 6v age with the affordable well used cars, trucks and mc's and know what dim is, lol. The chunky cap Im using may be helping at 'a light' as it is charged up and the bike is basically running all off the alt anyway + any cap discharge? Idk because for quite some years I dont ride at night. There are some tiny bats available that arent much bigger than my cap and can hide pretty well. I guess some/all? Euro bike have to have a light that works when the bike is off? Thing is that a tiny bat also has few ah's so a headlight and t-light is going to draw it down mighty fast. It has been sooo nice not to have to futz with another vehicle battery in that bike, it functions like the old magneto ignition bikes only better, imo.
