Hi all,
I acquired a 1980 SR500 from an uncle to the family. The bike was taken care of until, at some point, it couldn't. The bike has been sitting with fluids for some time; I don't know how long. I am reluctant to start the bike; I remember past conversations and have found a few notes lying around. The bike was overhauled, but I suspect it didn't complete the break-in. One clue is that the tires were replaced at or around the overhaul and look brand new. Aside from changing fluids and cleaning out the carbs, what is the best thing to do before starting the bike? Should I replace the oil with break-in oil? I'm comfortable with components outside and around the motor, but I've never encountered this break-in situation. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers!

Hi Mysto and welcome to the forum.
If you do not know how many km's are on the motor to this point since the supposed rebuild, or are unsure how long the oil that's in it has been, um, in it...
You may as well just start everything from a new baseline by draining and replacing everything and just driving as normal. Don't worry too much or overthink a break in aside from maybe avoiding sustained high rpm etc.. for a few hundred km's or so.
Unless you have documentation on precisely what was done and when, the motor may have been rebuilt, it may not have been rebuilt, or it may have been rebuilt poorly.
So freshen the fluids and clean the carb, get it running and see what it does.
