Just picked up a ‘79 here in Portland. Mostly original, for now. Plans are to get it fully street legal as it needs flashers, and the current LED headlight is a bit wonky (flashes at idle, only the high beam works, no light at all unless the engine is running, and the horn doesn’t work), and needs a mirror.
Waiting on the previous owner to email me a list of what all has been done to the bike but aside from the headlight swap and at least a partial 12V conversion (is that possible? Haven’t tested the flasher voltage yet), it looks to have a top end oil feed, a replica front fender, and a yet to be identified exhaust. Everything else appears original.
Plan on using it around the city and some light trail riding for camping and the like. I have an ‘06 KTM 450EXC-R for “serious” trail riding. This will be my first EVER street legal bike. Cars scare the crap out of me and I prefer trees and rocks to other people’s bad judgement, but, I hate having to load the KTM up when I’m just itching for a quick ride.
Plans are to relocate the battery for a clean triangle. Strip and repaint the tank. I’d like to stiffen up the fork or replace it w/ something that has better damping and fits a disc brake. Aside from that, I’ll be doing a custom headlight mask of some sort, as well as an custom spare gas can mount. First on the list is a new seat, though. The original foam is way too soft for my liking. Thinking something thinner and maybe a tad shorter.
Now to play the waiting game to get my cast off my hand so I can ride the d**n thing! Got too excited last ride on the KTM and high-five’d the shit out of the earth.
