Hi there, new boy here. I'm working on a friends 1979 XT500 kick start 6volt specification. He had intermittent issues starting it and thought it was the carb but I have now eliminated this. There was no spark at the plug so I checked the points and the gap was zero. Reset the points to correct setting and then began to get an intermittent spark at the points and subsequently at the plug, enough to get the bike to actually start but after a few times it refused to start at all. Back to the drawing board ! To cut a long story short, if I disconnect the wire from the points that goes to the coil wire ( only one of them ) I get a good spark at the points but obviously no spark at the plug. As soon as I reconnect those wires, I get no spark at the points and obviously no spark at the plug. I've disconnected the kill switch wire that goes 2 into one with the wire from the points to the coil wire, just to illuminate any issues with the kill switch. I suspected the coil itself to be the problem, purchased a new one off E Bay, fitted it but no joy, same problem. Not sure where to go from here now. Sound familiar to anyone ? Any suggestions ? Appreciate any advice.
Cheers Steve
