On my project XT500...Ive had it running several times in the past couple years...while chasing a transmission problem. Never had trouble starting and it ran strong.
I had the motor apart working on the transmission. (This was the 2nd time in my experiences with this bike that I had split the cases--the first time after putting it back it started up just fine)
This time though, it will not start and it feels like there is no compression..It actually felt weird to me the instant I put the engine back in the frame and kicked it over...
I looked at the exhaust valve at that time (pipe was off) but it seemed to work ok
I tried to actually start it up today, and now I can kick it easily thru no matter where the indicator is. Compression release is not connected, the arm is all the way down against the head.
I do hear alot of hissing out the carb end though. More than the usual suction noise...(Ive got a K&N pod on it)
I have also read about parking the bike at TDC, which I did not do at any time over the last couple of years.
Having said that, the head was off and in a box for 3 months....it sat on the bench a while at TDC after putting it back together...and the sypmtoms appeared right when trying to kick it over the first time, so the valves at that point, had not been opened for some time. Of course though, before I tore it down, it had been sitting 6 months at who knows what position....I wonder if the valve was stuck a bit open and stayed that way while sitting in the box....
Ok, what do I do? Can you get the valve cover off without pulling the engine? Than what? Pull a tappet cover and work the valve lightly with a brass punch? Some PB blaster down the valve shaft area? IVe read that sometimes they just "unstick" but Ive had no luck with that so far and my foot is sore.
Thanks in advance!!!!
