I have been working on my 1981 XT off and on for a couple years now. It belonged to a neighbor of my Brother, and it had been sitting, but his kids brought it back to life and it was seen often ripping up the farm fields there. It stopped running, loss of spark, and my Brother bought it. He pulled some parts off of it and later sold it to me. As a chassis with no front end, it fell off the stand I had it on and bent the gear shifter shaft pretty bad.
At first I straightened the shaft. I got the rest of it together, repaired the electrics and tried it out. It would not shift into 2nd gear, it just chattered. I made sure the teeth were lined up right, I know sometimes they get scrambled when replacing the shifter shaft oil seal.
I took the engine a part and split the cases. One of the shifter forks was damaged, not bent but chewed up, and one of the gears was also chewed up. I expect that happened when I was trying to get it into 2nd the day I tried to ride it, as I tried many times to make it go....I bought a used set of transmission internals and replaced that fork and gear. Put it back together and it still acted the same. ( I did adjust the throw of the pawl, where you put it in 2nd and line up the marks...I got it feeling really good on the bench as far as the shifts go.).
I put a new shifter shaft on it, along with the pawl assembly, and I went through the process of adjusting the throw of the pawl again since this was another whole shaft assembly...again, I got it feeling very good sitting still.. However, it STILL would not go into 2nd...except to say that I did get 2nd from neutral....just never from 1st.
I started taking potshots at the pawl adjustment, at some points it would chatter and at other points it was just a false neutral. I also lost the ability to get 2nd from neutral without the pawl adjustment spot on. I tried different weight oils in the case, no change.
I will pull the motor again and split the cases this winter, I just dont know at this point what to do with the thing, what to try at this point....the engine is in nice shape, no wear on the bore, the piston looks pristine etc. Pretty sure Im the first one whos ever had it apart.
Any input would be greatly appreciated...I had a similar thread going on another board, so I apologize if anyone has seen this before....figured Id give it a shot here
