I have read many threads regarding Supertrapp volume, with many saying they are somewhat loud if at least average performance is desired, louder when more power is needed. That being said, I currently have a trapp on a 79 I picked up, as pictured below, and it's way too loud for me. I believe my trapp is the older, smaller style. Do most guys run a 3 piece set up? the head pipe, a connector pipe which connects to the head pipe and snakes back behind the shock and then mounts to the trapp thus 3 components? if so, a 1 piece (muffler and pipe combined) set up I also own and would prefer will not work as currently configured as the pipe doesn't have the necessary curves to avoid hitting the back of the shock, even though it came off of a XT parts bike I purchased, but never saw running.. How do most guys do it, 2 or 3 pieces? Attachments:

I have a closed can Supertrapp that I plan to hang on one of my SR's. It's huge, and should be quiet. They are expensive. I have one on my CB750, I like it a lot.

Had a short ST can on my '76 XT, it was loud unless I snuffed it down with fewer plates then it didnt run well. My SR had the longg reverse cone, ss, that I experimented with quite a bit. It was more mellow, not sure about the 'quieter' by db's, it didnt seem to bark as sharply. I used all the plates and wanted more but never got any so I re-dimpled the screw holes to uniform them for spacing and added some small washers. Got the SR cafe racer over an indicated ton on the clock and verified on my Garmin Several years ago (2018 or 19?)on the Friday aft before the 4th of July I prepped it up for the weekend and went for a spin. Running down the long straight on the way home I was cranking through the gears, had just hit 5th at 80 and was going for more when the can blew the innards out....Let me tell you that an open megaphone on the cam is the definition of LOUD. It took me 3 different searches amounting to 2.5-3 hrs total to find the inner perf tube and still attached plates and reverse cone. Some ss welding will be required to repair this so I stuck on my cheap shorter Emgo. It is louder and doesnt perform well (in spite of my 'tuning' attempts) at higher rpms so my top end is down. Then I went into an extended down time myself and the bike into an unplanned storage (now we are both back). The ST long cones were never cheap and far worse now or I would have bought a replacement, it was a socially responsible sound (if I putted sensibly) and performed well 'when needed'. Guess I better find a ss welder to fix me up.

Just remembered that I blew the short one one the XT also; the reverse cone cap was held on by a throughbolt inside the can and a washer and nut on the cap. That one blew at about 45mph, never did find the cap so I made a flat cap from a paint can lid and used more baffle plates to reduce the pressure. Iirc I only had about 1/2 the plates in to keep it civilized. Guess my conclusion is that SuperTrapp (that actually performs) and 'quiet' is an oxymoron.

I've experimented with different silencers a fairbit, I'm currently running a cheap Chinese copy supertraap which looks decent but to be honest is too loud and certainly no better performance wise [possibly worse] than my reverse cone mega silencer which is a bit quieter. When I summon up the enthusiasm I'm going to swap back. Another down side is the supertraap blows soot all over the bottom of the swingarm, all in all not my best move but sometimes you have to find out the hard way but no major hit on the wallet
