i just bought a 1977 tt500 it runs good and looks good but the header pipe was painted black and soon as I started it the paint burnt off which is ok but it turned white and was on the timing chain adjustment cover and melted it which I guess I can adjust the pipe so it's not hitting it, my concern is why is the header pipe turning white ? Should I be concerned?

Run it at night, at some point it is likely to glow red hot. I' believe there are more than one contributer for a condition like that, but timing and a rich mixture are things I've heard in the past. If it doesn't get red hot, you're probably good.
