Hello all. I bought an old XT500, 6/79 which tells me its a 1980? in any case, it has the CDI ignition. The wiring was a mess and all I want to do is ride it off road....vintage MX to be exact. I removed most of the harness....
Coming out of the stator area, the harness there splits off....there is a group of individual connectors that all go to the CDI box...no problem there, that was intact. There is also a 4 position connector coming off the stator.....black, blue, yellow and white. Thats where I need some advice.... Black goes to a ground. The other 3 are hanging there right now.
The Ignition coil has white and black....the white turns to orange about half way to the CDI....the black goes to the CDI.... I assume the black is the switched ground, and the white to orange is the hot lead for the coil.
The CDI itself has the previously mentioned set of 4 indivivual push connectors headed to the stator....and also the two wires going to the coil. There is a third wire, black coded white that used to run to the ignition switch....I assume when grounded, that would kill the ignition.
Its already helping me typing this out...! Is there a simple diagram out there I could follow? I did search....I will try and track down a factory diagram either way, but Im out of time tonight!
Thanks in advance!

I found the diagram for mine...it seems most of that 4 position connector goes to stuff like neutral switch,..etc... The diagram shows only 7 wires coming out of the CDI box, mine has 8.....one is a black one by itself that had been cut at some point and is just hanging there. There is another black one that goes to a connector and that is intact. Point is, as there are two black wires, and one more total than the diagram shows....
I dont know what to do with that one. I will get back to it tonight perhaps. At some point I have to consider that an ignition component may have failed as well. Supposedly this thing ran until the kids who had it lost the key and tried to get around that with the wiring. I pulled off most of the harness already. One of my old Kawasakis has an early 6 volt CDI and the wiring is SOOOO much simpler, even though it was also an enduro. Only 3 wires and one harness on the CDI.
