Hello Everyone! My first post so Ill start with a bit about my bike.
1977 XT500 Ginger Brown 540 Big Bore with JE Piston MegaCycle Cam R/D Titanium Springs Hardened Rocker Arms Kibblewhite Brass Valve Guides Mikuni VM36mm Round Slide with K&N
The top end was built by Hoos Racing out of Iowa.
I blew the first headgasket at 150 miles. That was 100 after retorque. My second head gasket done by a local shop was a copper gasket. It didnt blow but it does leak.
Ive come to determine I need to have my head "decked" or resurfaced and have found a local machine shop that specializes to do that.
Since Ive gone broke from having others do the work and ending up with a non working machine I have decided to do this myself.
I have no prior experience with mechanics nor have I wrenched on this bike other than tightening the head bolts. I need your help!
I have a Haynes Manual for reference but I need to know what tools will assist me in pulling the motor and then taking it apart to have resurfaced and put it back together.
I do have a small socket set, 10-80ft/lb click type torque wrench, rubber mallet, pliers. I know that I will need a piston ring tool and possibly some circlip pliers. Outside of that Im not sure.
Any tips on how to remove the engine or what tools to bring to the table will be greatly appreciated. Im also curious about reassembly of the bike after it has been resurfaced. Will I need any specialty tools to set timing or adjust the valves after it has been resurfaced?
Thanks in advance!

Something's not quite right here, you've had the engine built but it blew a gasket 150 out? I would be going back and getting it done by the engine builder. As for decking the head, you would need a pretty messes up job to warp the head that much it needs decking. Are you talking head gasket or rocker cover, what exactly is leaking, oil/compression? I just don't want to think you would pull the motor down for a quick/easy fix.
