Have spent the last 18 months restoring a 78 XT From a us import to road registered here in Australia. Everything has finally come together after a few setbacks and the bike is running really well.Just one issue that someone may be able to help me with. The bike starts fine and all sounds good but when it warms up a single tick in the top end appears. Would anybody have any ideas on what that might be.

Any chance you could post up a sound clip? Just one single click and then nothing... or a repetitive click. Really, not much to go on.

The valve train can be noisy on these bikes. Make sure your valves and cam chain are adjusted, also make sure the little dampening washer on the cam chain adjuster is there and in good shape. Sometimes, the bores in the rocker box that the rocker shafts sit in get worn out causing noise. One way to fix this is to install set or "grub" screws to hold the shafts down so they don't move up.

Thanks for your responses but I'm not sure if I have explained the problem properly. When the bike starts cold everything sounds quiet and tight but when warmed up a slight ticking occurs at the top end of the engine. My mechanic tells me its no big deal its just what these bikes do, but he didn't explain why the ticking is not there when it's cold. Thanks Teledan for your thoughts.

Check your camchain tensioner, if the adjustments out you will get a ticking sound
