Hey guys, just picked up a 10/75 Yamaha 500 Enduro XT. I think i got it for a fair price, $800, runs strong but... Upon starting it smokes something awful, but not always. Also, if i had to guess id say it sounds like a bad wristpin, or some pretty bad piston slap. Bike is 99% whole (needs a blinker, fuel cap, and muffler cover). The odo. says 56xx miles, which i think is a fair representation. Guy i got it from is second owner, got it for free when the bike started smoking. He said a tree ripped the speedo cable off when he first got it, but hasnt ridden it 1000 miles he didnt think. Compression seems very strong via the kick start, and fires right up without a hitch every time.
On to the questions. From reading around on the forum via the search button, im assuming i need a piston? I plan to tear it down some winter and rebuild / restore it. Would like to get a little more power out of it if its easy. Do these respond well to the aftermarket cams ive seen? Thinking cam, light headwork, bore if necessary. Also, wondering about the optimal cruise rpm for these. At 65 its turning 5k which seems kinda excessive, but again thats where it makes its power i guess. Id like to run a little taller gearing on it if possible, not so its under the power band at hwy speed, but can go over 80 without redlining. Also, with a fresh bottom end and balancing, what can these be pushed to rpm wise? The one time i was brave enough i took it to 7k and it was still pulling hard. And lastly, do i need to run premium in this or is regular 87 octane good enough?
