Hello folks,I have just bought an '82 SR500.The bike has had a hard life and has spent the last four years being hammered around a farmyard.I bought the bike to give me something to do while I get over cancer treatment. The bike is a little rough and ready, but basically all there. The valvegear sounds like a sack of spanners though and are in desparate need of adjustment. Both my manuals refer to a round cap that needs to be removed to access the pointer and timing markers.So,... my question is,where the heck is it? I'm guessing its behind the r/h engine cover?Does that mean I need to drain the oil to get at it? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like that manual is a Haynes one and is refering to the XT engine. Just remove the L/H engine cover (as sitting on the bike) and the generator with the timing markings is under there. Although, if the top end is sounding rough....it doesn't bode well. If it hasn't got the modified oil way conversion you may be looking at a shagged cam and rockers/ cam chain. I can have cams and rockers Hard faced and reground with chanage from a hundred notes if you need it

Hi mate, The SR will be good recuperation therapy...you'll enjoy it. Often an engine that has been left for ages without much maintenance has a badly loose cam chain and maladjusted vaves...sort these out first to see if it quietens down some. Change the oil and filter straight away as well. As Aero said, timing wise it's all under the alternator cover...in a dry area so no oil leakage problems. Depending on the wear you may need to look at some further maintenance but first things first... Enjoy! SR

You might also want to find someone with an SR in good running order and have a listen.Aircooled 500cc singles can sound a little bit clattery(is that a word?) compared to a modern liquid cooled motor. I would also like to ask other members if they think it is necessary to use the timing marks on the mag for valve adjustment?I would think just bringing the motor up on the compression stroke maybe using the cam sight glass could get you close enough for a valve adjust???

Also see if any of the rubber dampers between the fins are missing.
They work to quiet thing down a little.
