Hello: I don't know if this is the right forum, I have two SR500's, and I am currently finishing up refurbishing a 1976 TT500, the bike is awesome. When I bought the bike it was in pieces and was sitting unwanted in the back of somebody's garage. I took it to the motor vehicles department to get it registered, and as luck would have it they gave me a license plate. Any way, as I was collecting parts to make it run, I bought an xt500 wiring harness, a left hand cluster for an xt, and front and rear brake switches. The engine has two wires coming off of it, and from what I understand is a 6 volt system. The xt I think is a 12 volt system. I don't care if the lights work when the engine isn't running, my goal is to get the lights working well enough so I won't get stopped. It has a cool stock headlight and tail light. the tail light has an extra wire coming off of it...Anyway, my goal is to get the lights working just well enough to keep me out of trouble with our local law enforcement... Has anyone tried to turn a TT500 into a dual sport type machine, or is this idea a waste of time..... Thanks!!

The TT has a power wire but it doesn't put out much...you can run a basic light system from the stator but that's about it. The Black wire powers the points and the Red/Yellow are for basic lighting. The XT is 6V as well, but it has a better stator system and more ability to power stuff like, lights, indicators etc. It has 3 wires, two for lighting and one for the points. If you just want basic lights and nothing else...then maybe the TT system might do...however the XT system is more capable...maybe you might want to invest in the XT rotor and stator... SR

Skid, as Stew said the XT/TT are both 6v. The TT lighting was a simple affair headlight and taillight only, no brakelight or indicators. It was also unregulated, meaning the more revs the brighter the light. The XT was a little more complicated with a battery, rectifier and regulator. It also came with brakelight, indicators and a horn. To convert your TT to XT lighting you need an XT lighting coil. The flywheel and backing plate are the same. The TT/XT lighting coils look the same but they are different. As for the third wire at the tail light that is for the brakelight. The XT can be converted to 12v simply PM me and I'll send you some photos & wire diagram. Curly

Skid, forgot to add the TT (in OZ) anyway only needs a switchable head/tail light and brakelight to be road legal. The TT lighting coil will support this. If you like I could do a simple wire diagram for you. Curly

Stew, Curly...Thanks for the advise, I have a junk xt500 engine in my hot water room, sounds like to make this work I will need to take the lighting coil out of it and see if I can install it on the TT. Unfortunately, I am in Eastern Washington USA, where full lighting is required, and law enforcement are hungry for revenue. Off subject, I was in Australia a couple of years ago, and visited Queensland. Great people in Australia it was a blast!

The situation is complicated. Here in South Oz, the police seem to expect everything to work, Lights, Horn, Indicators, etc, without the engine running. Road rules, despite our allegedly national system, differ from state to state. Its only recently that we've been allowed to register TT's here in South Oz. Back when they were new, we weren't allowed to, but recently they started letting us register bikes without Australian compliance plates if they were made before 1985. Also, later XTs outside OZ were 12 volt I believe. I vote for a simple diode/regulator/battery setup running off your TT lighting coil. Then run everything off the battery except the head light, which runs straight off the lighting coil. This is how it works on the original wiring loom on my '81 Australian model XT. The XT charging coil isn't really big enough, either. I only have a short ride to work, and if I do it with the head light on, the battery slowly goes flat over three weeks or so. Mick
