I have slowly been working on my bike. One of the projects today was to build a tachometer drive plug. yeah I know that I could purchase one I would rather build than purchase if it is within my skill level ;D I am going with an electronic tach and have no need for the cable. I settled on a piece of metal that originally lookec like it was part of an air conditioning fitting. I turned it to the proper diameter and length. I drilled a hole in the end and put in a few 6mm threads so that I could use a bolt for removal. One thing that was odd was there was a 6 mm bolt that went into the cam cover vertically about an inch behind the tach drive port. The bolt was loose enough to turn with the fingers so i unscrewed it and noticed that it was some kind of locating pin. It seemed to snug down without difficulty. Any idea what it is for? Here is my plug.

Well done...it's good to make your own stuff. That screw locates the tacho drive gear...the cable end has an O ring seal on it as well...there is also an oil seal on the output side of the gear before it... You can locate the tacho plug behind the circlip, but better if it doesn't touch the rotating gear behind. Here is what I make to do the job for mine if I take the cable out...I hollow-out the back so it doesn't touch the gear drive... You can also buy them cheaply from places like Vanem etc. if you did want to...still, it is always good to make you own. SR

Hi Stew Does that big notch fit fit with the camshaft under it locating it? I'll have to study what you mean.
I noticed the notch in my tach cable end and thought that it was for an o-ring but there wasn't one in place. Ill cut a groove in my new plug for an o-ring.
I don't want to use liquid sealant for fear of a piece of it breaking off and getting into the oiling system. At least the big hole is filled for now.

No that is just so I can have a knob to pull it out and place it back...the large groove is so the circlip can be fitted behind it. Here's one on my DCM... With the oil seal in place at the end of the gear you shouldn't get any oil leaks, the O ring just makes sure and holds it in place. SR

Ah so I was looking at your part backward.
When i fit mine in the first time, it was a little long and I machined it shorter till the circlip fit.
I think I will leave it alone unless I get a bit of oil past it.
Thanks

Just make sure that the end of the tacho cable gear doesn't rub against the end of your plug...that's why I rebate the centre of the end of the plug a bit so it can't... SR
