That's it, the annual Flinders Touring Motorcycle Association toy run has been and gone. The highlight of the doing the "90 mile" for me is the sprint through Germein Gorge on my SR. Which brings me to a question - am I turning into a Grumpy Old Man? It seems to me that every year some plonker on a sports bike takes advantage of the obscene rear wheel horsepower under his command to blast past me on the straight leading into the first corner, than proceeds to hold me up on every bend as he tip toes his way through 5 miles of premier twisties. It happened again this year, a bloke on a Hyabusa overtook me then proceeded to give me every opportunity to ride up his exhaust pipes on the next 15 corners. On the brakes when ideally I'd be on the throttle with a shit eating grin, and the toe of my boot gently skimming the blacktop. So back to my question. Was I being a grumpy old man when I told him at the next stop that I was sick of hearing about how fast his bike goes in a straight line and he shouldn't buy a fast bike if he can't ride the f@#$%ng thing around corners? Was I being a touch contentious when I proclaimed I was sick of running up the arses of sports bike riders who can only go hard in a straight line? Maybe I should mellow out a bit. Mick

I think that pretty much sums up my attitude as well toward a bunch of wanna- be's. The current crop of 600 crotch rockets have more than enough power for 90% of the people that will buy that style of bike.
I was on one of those toys runs as well 20+ years ago and bored as hell with a bunch of Harleys just poking around. Once we got back into town, I wasn't paying much attention any more when they came to almost a complete stop in front of me. I can say that standing that old RD350 on her nose at 35mph, clicking down a couple gears into first and, dropping the rear wheel back down at about 5 mph sure got there attention, as well as mine!

Mick, why did you wait till the end to give him a lip full ? I would have been give him the beans at the first corner ! I like to overtake/undertake them in the most unlikely spot and really give it to them whilst doing it ! Along with the usual expletives tell them to go back to the freeway! In answer to your question NO! You are already one, but that is your right. Besides you've earnt it with the passage of time. Curly (BOFGB) P.S. for all those that don't know me! You are right, but I just couldn't find a big enough gap. He was all over the road like a mad woman. When he finally got his arse into gear on a straight stretch and got away I settled into it and started having fun, only to come up behind a 750 Norton. The red mist came down over the eyes, and I zapped him in a spot where I had no business doing so, then laid 6 feet of rubber (Norton riders estimate, not mine) pulling the old girl up enough for the next corner. I should have apologised to him actually, he was keeping to a conservative line and scooting pretty well since he had his missus on the back, so I had no beef with him. Trouble was, the blood was up after the Hyabusa experience. Mick

From reading your two posts, I must make the affirmation that you most definitely are into the latter stages G.O.M. hood. Trust me...it takes one to recognize the symptoms. Give 'em hell and laugh insanely when confronted...........scares the bejeezus out of the sprouts.

Like a few ahead of me have said yeh you're a GOM, but you have earned the right to be one. You know your bike and your limitations. There is nothing more frustrating than what you experienced, been there, done that. Now I just figure it's my luck of the draw and enjoy what I can of the ride. I've even pulled over for a bit just to get some distance if I know there is a particularly fun section comming up. My ex used to ask me why I always sped up in the twisty's, I always gave her the same answer "Because that's where the fun is!"
