I want to get an alternative gas cap for my stock tanked 78 SR.
It doesnt have an ignition switch so I thought that carrying a key around to open the gas cap was excessive.
Has anyone else swapped caps?
thanks

It might be easier to find a different tank.
You've probably already looked at the thread under Tanks and Bodywork about changing tanks.
I'm always keeping my eye open for other tanks that might work. I like the shape of the stock tank, but I'm with you. I'd like a different kind of cap. One that doesn't need a key.

A buddy of mine fitted one of those flush-mount aircraft looking caps onto his XS650. Had to cut/weld it in of course, but very cool.

That was what I was thinking. Nothing stock. Has anyone had luck in removing the pins in the key lock or putting an external button on the latch?
For me this is a bike that I want to do it without spending a hundred or more. TIA

If you remove material from the fuel cap's chrome outer cover, it is possible to push in the plunger of the lock with your thumb, while exerting downward pressure on the cap. It can then be opened without a key. Picture of modified cap: regards Mark B

Thanks, I ended up making an extended button by replacing the plunger with a longer sheet metal unit that I bent up to form a flat button. Had to grind off the pin that extended from the lock so that it would slide in the slot under the lock. I didnt grind the chrome cover as it fit under it. Here is what it looks like:
