I have a Mikuni slide from a 36mmVM marked 1.5. It looks like it hasn't been machined or filed, however the cutaway measures at about 2.5. I've always believed that a 1.5 stamped on the slide refers to a 1.5mm cutaway, 2.0 = 2.0mm etc. However a learned colleague (G'day Stew) suggested that there may not be a zero, and that the 1.5 is actually added to a "base" cutaway dimension. Can somebody please confirm, preferably by doing a measurement. thanks

I have a couple 36mm slides on the bench. If I measure the total length on the straight side they both measure 46.5 mm the one marked 2.5 measures 42.5 on thr cutaway side the one marked 3.0 measures 42.0 on the cutaway side from this the difference between the long and short side is the cutaway BUT it does not equal the # on the slide.. !!!

Thanks nsman, If my maths is up to scratch, it looks like slides may start with a 1.5 cutaway and measuring starts from there. From memory, the cutaway on mine was slightly greater than 2.5, maybe 3.0mm.... it was a quick (rough!) measure in the heat of a frantic assembly.

I sure love that kind of standardization. The old expression of calling a spade a spade comes to mind. Thanks for the insight.

The cut away is measured in 1\16 of an inch. From Amel carbs. A 1.5 is 3\32 inch

Paul, regardless of where the measurement starts- a 2.5 slide is an excellent mid-way start point for a 34 or a 36 vm. On the contrary, 1.5 would be too rich,so either file the slide or buy a new one if you can't get it to run as you'd like.
