Hello everyone, I've just registered as a member and am a bit of a motorcycle novice so bare with me! An old boy locally was kind enough to give me his old '78 SR500 which was getting in his way! Having done a bit of research, i've come across a bike which i find absolutely awe inspiring - i think it won 'Best domestic' bike at the '07 Mooneyes show. I'd really appreciate anyones help or opinions on the frame design as i'd like to create something similar with my own SR. I can't quite understand how he's achieved the rake on the seat rails to match that of the top tube, it seems obvious comparing it to mine that he's lost some tubing somewhere but i can't see how he's achieved the stance. The back of the seat rails seem to still be the same hight as the top of the shocks which makes me wonder if he's chopped down the tubing at the bottom of the 'V' section to physically lower the whole rear end. Also interested to try and find out what forks he's used. Sorry for all the questions any thoughts and opinions would be most appreciated. Hope this sort of question is ok? Cheers!

Almost looks as though he cut the back part of the frame off, then made new shock mount point and shorter shocks. This would bring the swingarm "up". The more i look at it, though, the more I think there has been some other frame modifications. Nice inverted fork, too! Any more pictures of the bike?

Interesting looking machine I agree...just modified enough. The forks are shorter but they look like drum brake ones off a 100 or a 90 or similar... The frame may well have had the back cut off and another set of tubes welded on. Looks OK. SR

and take a longer swingarm. keep the clutch in the middle from the wheel centers.

I'd guess the rails have been replaced with longer sections to allow them to be set lower and follow the line of the spine. This would give lower shock mounts too.
I don't think they are upside down forks either. They look like standard one cleaned up and fitted with shrouds at the top.

If you haven't ridden much you might want to keep your bike near stock for a while to get the feel of what it is like. The modifications might make it ride or handle quite different and not always to the good.
This bike looks like it might be wearing a 21" front tire as well as having the frame modified. At least they have kept a front brake.

Thanks for all your opinions so far. I've been riding my bike in standard form for around 3months now, not long i know but just getting used to it. Couple more pictures that were taken at the Mooneyes show in '07 I wonder if the forks maybe from an old Ducati Mach1? I found out also that the swing arms were definately lengthened so making some progress!

The front end looks like standard XT/TT500 forks with a shroud over the top. Definitely not USD forks. You can see the oil drain at the bottom of the leg.
Agreed, front wheel looks like a 21". Stock wheel, just painted.
I would guess that the whole front end is from a XT/TT500 (clamps, forks, wheel)
The seat rails are either stock and bent down to fall into a straight line with the backbone or were cut and replaced with new tubes.
Swingarm does look to be about 1"-2" over stock length.
Overall, one of the nicest brat bikes I have seen. Wouldn't mind it for myself. (high praise from a cafe' guy ;D)

what i think i like most about this bike, is the fact that its not a hard tail. although is has a hard tail stance.
