Has anyone tried mounting either a Yamaha 450 or 660 engine with electric starter from a quad in the SR? They both look like they would pretty much just bolt in with room to spare. The only problem might be finding room for the radiator.

Hi Sue23,
Have you considered the Yamaha XT600, that came with an electric start in the early 90's, I think.
It may be possible to shoe-horn that motor into the SR500 frame. The XT600 had a very similar motor to the SRX-600.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, MikeC.

Oh and by the way, no radiator required, with the XT600 motor.

Besides the XT600 there was also an XT550 and TT600 but those are all so rare that you can't find used motors anywhere. On the other hand they have sold tons of quads so there are lots of motors on ebay and there were even a couple close by on craigslist. They want $2000-$3000 for the motors though so it's probably not practical since that's a lot more than the bike is worth.

Hi Sue,If your stock engine is worn out I would recommend a top end re-build,re-bore,wiseco piston [ better than stock replacement] new camchain, possible new valves pending condition, valve seals.Having done this job last winter I reckon its the most econimical way forward I think it cost me £200 g.b.p for what is at the end of the day a new engine or very near.Hopefully food for thought. The 660 motor from those 4 wheelers-Raptors??- has certainly crossed my mind. It would solve my electric start problem and add plenty of power.
I 've seen entire used 660 4 wheelers for $2500-kinda expensive but.... .
Yeah, it has crossed my mind. Heck, maybe they even have a reverse?

Not sure about the Raptors, but I have a 2x4 yamaha Grizzly? and the base of teh motor around the crank etc is about 2 times as wide as your average SR, with teh pull start assemble added and gear box with forward and reverse. Almost as wide as a twin really.
Not sure it would work in an SR frame
