I was in the process of putting my newly sprayed side panels and seat cowl back on my 79 SR, once they were on after a few minutes of admiring the way she is taking shape I thought I would just start her up and admire the noise again.....
I set her to TDC and kicked the starter down - the pedal then seemed to go a lot further down in its travel than previously and anded up getting stuck on the rear brake pedal - on further inspection, this has obviously happened befrore with the previous owner as the metal on the brake pedal has marks on it as does the kickstart where they have hit each other.
I am sure the kickstart should stop before it hits the pedal....
I have looked at the pedals and checked my trusty Haynes - does anyone think this may be the recoil spring that needs renewing or the kick gearing? Very strange.........
When I fired the bike up at the weekend after a few months of re-building I didn't notice the kickstart doing this - but maybe I was so excited she started so quickly I didn't see what I should have done.

Is the kick lever positioned on the shaft splines correctly? The split in the pivot boss should be at about the 7 o'clock position on the kickstarter shaft.

I checked the lever and for some reason it didn't do it today, really odd. I will take the kickstart off and have a good look over the weekend. Thanks for your advice

It sounds to me like the kick start stop broke on you. This happened to my SR too. My bud had a spare engine that he was building to race and they yank the kick start parts out to save wieght and told me to take what I needed. Opened it up and the stop was broke in that engine also. Do I see a trend here? Anyway, it's an easy fix and should be adressed in your shop manual. Hope this helps. Steve

Hi Bert,Are you sure you have a sr kickstart lever and that the previous owner hasn't fitted a xt lever? I recently bought a xr lever because the chrome was in excellent nick but unfortunately it fouls the rear brake lever similar possibly to your situation, needless to say i've had the original re-chromed and put it back. The sr lever has a definite crank in it to avoid the brake lever. Regards,Andy

Out of interest the 400 kickstarts are angled to move out a little further...might be of interest. See pics... 500 kickstart... 400 kickstart... SR

Thanks for all the help, this site has been a great wealth of info while I have been re-building the bike, I have studied the pictures on the two bikes, mine looks so much like the SR500 but the bike is in essence an SR400. I have tried to find a bit more out about it, it was bought by an Australian relative in 1999 from a bike shop in Preston, Northern England but there is no info prior to that date. It is definately an import as the speedo is in KPH and looks original. The numbers on the engine only have the first two digits and nothing after that..... I have kicked the engine over a few times this week and the kickstart works perfectly, I really don't know what happened.
