The price of SRs in Australia are really continuing to rise! I'm not talking about grey imports with fancy mods, I'm talking clean stock bikes in basically original condition with low to average kms. When I bought my bike 18 months ago the only one advertised in Melbourne was $3800 with 70,000km, which was a lot. I got mine for under $3000 at 48,000km (apparently with a 7,000km motor) and that was average around the country for a good one stock, though on the high end of average. But in the last week the bike's I've seen advertised include:
1978 Clean stock 38,000km - $6000
1981 Clean stock 48,000km - $6,500
They're getting as bad as XS650s!

It's a bit stupid, but remember that people can ask $30,000 for an SR - but it doesn't mean they'll get it!

I got my first 78 with 5400 miles in 94 for $600 US and my second SR with 7700 miles for $1240 last summer. My 79 XT500 with 6300 miles was $750 last summer. I think the conversion rate to Aus$ is about Aus1.5/1 US
I was worried that I paid too much for my second SR but it looks like a good investment now.
edit: My first SR cost was some used kitchen cabinets and $300 cash. It was a good bike until I ran it out of oil. Now fixed.

I still think of the old days when gas was .25 cents, yes prices are going up, but I still want to buy something cheap. I feel rich bank wise but then again it's probably based on that .25 cent gas. Yes the kids will get it all because I am to stupid to spend the money.

XT's are the same - the last 12 months has seen their prices hit the roof....bugger it (thinking of the ones you were going to buy but didn't)
I think approaching the 30 year classic mark is helping to raise the SR prices, its a cheaper classic
EDIT: as we speak, an original SR with 565km's on ebay AUS, has been listed...classified price 10,500

I think that some of it has to do with deus hitting the market with 18 grand SRs. I paid 2 grand for my stock sr with about 35k on the speedo and $100 for my xt without a speedo.
It is the same with scooters, I now pretty much buy up anything that I can afford cos I know that they are just going to go up in price. I am usually the guy buying a bike so I would prefer bikes to stay down in price as much as possible but at some point if you can't beat em join em.
I am starting to look at buying up anything late 60s to late 70s japanese for the same reasons. Unfortunately every type of car and bike I have ever been interested in have become collectable to some point so I am always kicking myself for thos vehicles I didnt buy at the time.

Hey Marlon, you say that the pricing is becoming rediculous as I tend to agree. Out of curiosity, how much would you sell your sr400 for if you had too? Moving down to Melb in 3 weeks to Surrey Hills BTW

They must be selling for that high price otherwise, you wouldn't be seeing it that high very long. I have to ask why? Why would someone spend that much on a SR? By US standards, the AUS prices where already high. If a SR here is priced over $1000.00 US, it had better be something special.

Like everything, it's all about what the market will bear. Parts of the world have a higher demand for these bikes, more people looking for them. Myself, I paid $1500.00 CDN earlier this year for two frames, a complete engine in unknown condition, half an engine, six rims, three tanks, (one garbage) and several boxes of misc parts, most of which is useless to me. I was happy to pay it. Just nothing else was available to me withing my comfortable range... Other people in other markets may think I was crazy. Whattya gonna do. Eventually, (after even more money and parts) I will have two complete SR's. To me, that's priceless and likely will still be a fair amount less money spent than in other markets around the world. Paul, I'd be pretty happy If I got 10k for my bike, Especially now I've cut the frame.
Milky, re that $10,500 SR - that's been for sale for a year now. Like i said before, people can ask whatever they want for an SR. Doesn't mean anyone will buy it.

I have no problems with the current prices being asked for the good original/restore/modified SR (and XT500's), if you compare the prices to what you will pay for a modern Japanese bike (not the new generation Chinese/Korean cheapies) I think they are fairly good value at $3000 - 4000.
My pet hate are the guys who see these good original/restore/modified bikes selling for these prices and suddenly think that the heap of shit that has sat in the shed or under a tarp out behind the shed for the last 25years rusting and corroding away is also worth that kind of money. When you tell them that it is a piece of junk worth about $500, and that is would require at least $3000 spent on it to make it worth the $3500 that they are currently selling for, they get really offended and acuse you of trying to rip them off.
$AUS for the above prices

My ebay is full of closed SR's, some stock and some slightly modified that have failed to sell.
One in particular didn't reach the buy it now price of 10500, was relisted at 8, got no bids, started from four, reached four and a half and failed to sell.
People can ask what they want. Doesn't mean you'll sell it.

Here here ,beauty is always in the eye of the beholder & something is worth what someone is willing to pay ! Good clean SR in WA -$3000 ,rusty complete bike with no rego & not sure if it goes $500 . A mate of mine picked up a sweet SZR660 last week for $1500 ,licensed with 31000ks on it. He spent $500 on it & cleaned it up a treat ! There is one for sale for $4500 but that doesn't mean his is worth that now either! Cheers Dave.
