Hi SR 500 Forum :: SR500 Technical Forums :: Suspension, Chassis & Brakes :: trick or tool to remove rear spring from shock? Hi brazenc5 I use that exact tool and find that it is just great and safe ie. no springs flying across workshop at supersonic speed ...TC

I've always had to use a vise to hold the bottom eye of the shock and two people . One with strong hands to compress the spring and one with nimble fingers for the keeper.

Haven't tried it on my SR, but on my XT I was able to remove the retainer on the spring simply by putting the preload adjustment on the lightest setting and using a bit of muscle power to pull the spring down. Mick

Thanks for the input guys! Its always good to hear experiences of others.
I may try the "vice and friend" method, and if thats too much trouble, i'll buy the shock spring tool.
I'm glad TC was able to verify that the same tool works on the OEM SR shock/spring. That was my biggest concern!

Home made spring compressor FTW. Works on almost all motorcycles and snowmobiles. I would post a pic but I lost my camera!

I sometimes use larger zip-ties on opposite sides to compress several coils of the springs...simple and works. SR

I am luck to still have a genuine Honda shock spring compressor from my days as a mechanic with a Honda dealership back in the 80's. Having said that, I still use the "vice and muscle" technique most of the time because getting the correct tool out of the tool box and assembling/settting it up is just too much hassle.

Hi Guys, This is another tool that can be used. www.transquip.com.au/product.aspx?ID=1133I have used them on my SR rear shocks to disassemble them, it helps to have another pair of hands, to help hold everything in place. Cheers, MikeC
