G'day All. I've got some new bars to fit to my bike, with a 22cm rise I've fitted an extended brake line, and will fit a decrompression lever to the right side, but I need longer clutch and throttle cables. I'll head into the shops later this week with some old cables and see if I can match some long universals to them, but does anybody know of any particular cables - ie from other bikes - that will do the job? I've located some aftermarket extended cables for the SR but I'd rather try the budget options first... Thanks, Matt

Mate what about the forward controls & runner boards he he ?What a pity I had my 78 with that setup on it (stingray bars)& you'll spew ,as I had to cut them down to make them fit the bars I put on & the bars are brand new & not on the bike anymore .This gives me an idea for a new column though ,"a swap unwanted parts section" cheers Dave.

Cables are easily made, but the Japanese aftermarket ones are generally as good as genuine ones...worth the effort to get the better cables if you can. SR

Mate what about the forward controls & runner boards he he ? Hmmm ;D I'm actually thinking of mini boards a couple of inches forward of the standard pegs! I've got some vintage saddlebags too - this is going to look sweet! Hope I can do it in time for the Bethanga rally. I'll be the only SR rider who isn't suffering a 'hunched-spine' injury! a swap unwanted parts section That sounds to me like a very good idea!

Hi Matt,
Glad I got a picture of your bike before you start messing with it!
I realy like that muffler...
Anyway it was great to meet you and your friend at the Italian Motorcycle day. It was a great show plenty of bikes, just how I like it.
Can I send you a copy of the pic of your bike?
Cheers, MikeC

Can I send you a copy of the pic of your bike? Please do! I've been messing with it for a while, changing styles (the cool thing about this bike). It's a shame I didn't get a photo a week ago - it had lower bars and bar end mirrors dropped down on a nice angle which I though looked *really* cool from front on. That was pretty comfy, but I want even comfier as my Sunday rides grow from half days to full days on the road, and I consciously pursue a more cruisey style of riding ans aesthetic (frankly, while I love them, I'm proud to be doing something other than a cafe racer build with an SR! . I used to have drag bars (see link) but they were on the verge of giving me a repetitive strain injury bikepics.com/members/mattbishop/78sr500/ I also want to get a Royal Enfield 24L touring tank ($250 new) on the bike - for practical purposes but also aesthetic - but the frame might be too thick to take it.

Those tanks look tops. Well done for bringing this site to our attention. Gotta be impressed with it. Look like lots of parts that might fit the SR's. I say might, coz you don't know till you try, but certainly well worth investigating things like the big tank, the open mufflers, the headlight mounts, etc. Especially at those prices. Mick

P.S. While you are fitting the forward controls and runner boards, what about a foot clutch and hand shifter on the tank? Won't need a longer clutch cable, then. Mick

Yeah, NB the $100 exhausts! ;D I have fantisised about the hand shifter, but that really demands a hard-tail, and I'm not prepared to cut the frame - a year from now I might take the bike in a different direction again so it all has to be reversible, besides it's a sin to do such irreversible mods to classic bikes! Here's the look (bar wise) I've originally been going for. I got the same mirrors ready to go. I'm a bit tempted to go higher still, but we'll see (you know those 60s Triumphs with the chopper bars but stock frame and seat).
