I have read this article before. I find it comforting - it says the SR feels strained and out of breath above 75 mph. That pretty much sums my bike up nicely, its nice to know there is nothing much wrong with it, they were built like it. I am running 17/42 gears, I'm tempted to go back to the standard 16/44 gearing to see what it feels like. Can't beat a '78 SR for looks, but I'm convinced a very nice cafe racer/street tracker/ streetfighter can be built from an XT. I'm keeping my eyes open for an XT with a good engine and a straight frame, so I can do the same. I'm hoping to score one that is otherwise pretty rough, so I can get it for the right price. Anything complete and tidy is pretty expensive, and like a good SR it would be a shame to mess it up. The things that attract me are that the rougies are a little cheaper than a rough SR, I believe later models ones have the big inlet valve, but the engines are more "revvy" due to the lighter cranks. Combined with significantly lighter weight, and I reckon they would work out very well. Look in the projects sub-board, there is a man doing one now, and it is looking real promising. One point is that the SR has less rake than an XT, but I believe substituting an 18 inch front wheel would lower the front of the bike and effectively change the steering angle, and if I've got my geometry right, bring it closer to the SR rake. Whatever you do keep looking, these things are worth the effort. Mick

WMD ,ask curly for a pic of his cafe XT, it is nice!! and can take speed humps in a single bound! and ,like the guy's say, DO IT, these bikes respond extremely well to a hot up to say the least.
