Im new here, but now that ive made some progress i decided id post up!....
I stripped my frame with some crazy brush on stripper stuff from Home Depot. I also cut off all the brackets and tabs i do not plan on using. Stuff like side cover brackets, center stand brackets, wiring clips, passenger peg brackets, and i also cut the "subframe" or what have you right behind the upper shock mounts where the stock seat extends to.
stripped frame...
After that i started working on my seat pan. I had the pans shape already cut out, but i put some more contour to it and started figuring out how to mount it to the bike.
Pan with hump for tank bracket clearance...
Welded...
Mounted to stripped/ cut frame...
I plan on putting some vertical braces under the seat pan towards the back to give it some strength. I also need to decide how to attach the pan while the seat as the padding and upholstery on it.... hmmmmm. Ive got a couple ideas i just need to pick one and roll with it. Either threaded bosses welded to the pan or ill make a "bridge bolt" type of deal like the old school skate board hardware. With the bridge i can upholster the seat and not have to worry about the bolts spinning while i tighten them from underneath. I think the threaded boss under the seat padding will be ideal though.
Here is the donor bike(this bike has no title but the stripped frame is good to go). You can see how long the subframe was and maybe some of the brackets and stuff ive removed.
Here we have the pan half ass mounted to the donor bike to make sure it clears the gas tank bracket...
Before i decided to call it quits for the night i cut up my recently purchased memory foam seat cushion for my seat padding. Now i dont know the first thing about upholstery but apparently im about to learn! Im thinking i will cut another piece thats a little wider than the pan itself so it wraps around the edges. Again, i have no idea what im doing here, just diving on in...
And i got a smoking deal on these Vortex Clip-Ons too off ebay...
Also Ray(good friend and business partner) got this KZ900. I think its a 79 i dont remember, but it was only a couple hundred bucks and it came with all the parts and was pretty complete. The motor has compression and all so he decided to ditch his CSR750 chopper project and start this. We strolled next door to the motorbike shop and they happened to have a wrecked 02 GSXR1000. So..... What we did was bought the rear swing arm and shock setup. HE through in these terrible looking wheels for free cause they were trashed so we could mock some stuff up. The swing arm needs little fabrication to make it fit and it runs a 200 series tire on this hog! Pretty neat!....
