I've just noticed when removing the tank recently, fuel seems to drip from where the fuel hose is usually connected. I've tried it on both settings that require the vacuum hose for any flow (ON and RESERVE) - yet still a drip.
Should this be a cause for concern - as I've also noticed that there is now a constant smell of fuel surrounding my bike (which i dont really mind but my dog does).
My next guess is to get in there and replace some of the seals... anyone got any ideas where i can get some of these?
cheers, T

Check with your local dealer. I believe that K&L Supply carries rebuild kits.

From my experience re-build kits aren't very successful on old taps...better to buy a new one. Try Mike's XS in the US...not bad prices and new stuff...'cept with the exchange rate on the Aus dollar right now of course!!! SR

Hey Stew, Why do you think this is? From my experience re-build kits aren't very successful on old taps Just in case I ever have to do mine. Maybe the back of the position lever is worn also?

I had the same petcock problem with the XS 400 I used to own, which used the same petcock as the SR. Rebuilt it with a K&L kit, and it still leaked, a little less. Ended up buying a new oem petcock!$$$$

I know from experience that if you don't lube the "O" ring that goes around the selector lever that it will leak. Rebuild kit or not.
My guess is that even though one can replace the rubber parts in a petcock, the back of the selection lever should also be lightly sanded flat. Maybe also increase the pressure on the lever by lightly bending the round wave spring. It's the seal between the rubber disc w/ 4 holes and the back of the lever that will keep a petcock from leaking.

if you are looking to replace your tap yamaha still makes and sells the factory correct petcock. i know as i have just purchased and installed one on my bike. the bad news is its a factory piece so it comes with the factory price. i had to give $117us for mine. but look on the bright side its still available

And now a squeak from under Paul's shade tree....
In my experience the figure 8 seal ring gets hard with age and perhaps shrinks a little. I just disassemble and clean the petcock assembly to remove all grit and debris. Then measure the seal thickness with a set of calipers. Throw the seal in some carb dip type cleaner (Methylene chloride) and check it every 3-5 minutes until it has swollen about .010". Rinse and reassemble. Keep gas on it from then on. Works for me.

Yes it would be my guess that the back face of the lever wears unevenly and won't seal even against a new sealing rubber... Maybe if you were very careful you could re-make the surface by sanding etc., however then you are reducing the contact pressure against the seal as well...for $40US it's got to be worth getting a new one in my mind. Especially if you are fitting a carby with no vac inlet such a Mic 36/38 at the same time. (although perhaps it's less of a bargain with the Aus $ these days!). SR

I've put the Mikes XS non-vacuum petcock on mine with no problems. Get the new tap to tank screws and washers too. He also sells a rubber plug to block off the vacuum barb on the carb. Lots of his stuff will fit SRs but it is up to you to figure out what. He only guaratees them to fit what he says they will fit.His prices are very good also. Right on the mark Stew, as usual.

I have found the screws that hold the petcock on leak. I use Permatex gasket sealer 2A. It is non-hardening and gas will not bother it.
